Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf don finally nominate new deputy governor for di state. Di man wey get di nod na Murtala Sule Garo, wey be son-in-law to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Governor Yusuf don send Garo name go Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation. Di position come dey vacant since March 27, 2026 wen former deputy governor Aminu Gwarzo resign.
Gwarzo resignation follow serious wahala between am and Governor Yusuf. Days before im resign, di state assembly don already begin move to impeach am over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and financial wahala.
After Gwarzo leave office, Governor Yusuf even accuse am say im try to remove am from power. So di deputy governor seat don dey empty for some weeks now.
For statement wey Governor Yusuf chief press secretary Mustapha Muhammad sign, dem say di nomination follow Section 191(3) of di 1999 Constitution. Dat section give governor power to nominate deputy governor wen vacancy dey.
“Following wide consultations with key stakeholders, di Governor don ask di Assembly to approve Garo nomination,” di statement yarn.
Murtala Sule Garo na seasoned political administrator wey don spend over 20 years for politics. Im don serve as State Organising Secretary of im party, Special Adviser to Kano State Governor, and elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government.
Im record also include Chairman of ALGON Kano, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Deputy Governorship Candidate of di APC for 2023 elections.
Di nomination come 26 days after di deputy governor seat become empty. Inside di APC, plenty contenders dey for di position. Among dem na former Secretary to di Government of Kano State Rabiu Suleiman and lawmaker representing Rano/Kibiya/Bunkure Federal Constituency Kabiru Alhassan.
But Garo win di race partly because Governor Yusuf wan appease APC members wey im meet inside di party. Anoda big factor na di defection of 2023 APC governorship candidate Nasiru Gawuna to opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Gawuna leave APC weeks after Governor Yusuf join di party from NNPP. Dat defection help Garo case plenty.
Ironically, both Garo and Gawuna don share history. For 2019, police arrest both of dem for alleged electoral malpractice during Kano governorship election collation.
Dat time, as results dey collated, PDP candidate Abba Yusuf dey lead incumbent governor Abdullahi Ganduje. Wen dem reach Nasarawa Local Government result, Garo and Gawuna allegedly invade di collation centre and tear di result sheets.
Dem try to prevent final announcement wey go likely give victory to opposition candidate. Physical confrontation break out between party agents and security personnel.
Police intervene and carry Garo and Gawuna go custody to rescue dem from angry mob and investigate di disruption. Di Nasarawa results get damaged, and INEC declare di election “inconclusive.”
Dat incident lead to supplementary election wey make Governor Ganduje narrow di gap and retain im seat. Now, years later, Garo dey return to power as deputy governor nominee.
Governor Yusuf media aide say di nomination na part of efforts to strengthen governance and sustain effective service delivery for Kano. Dem describe Garo as experienced administrator wey fit help move di state forward.
Di Kano State House of Assembly now get di ball for dia court to screen and confirm di nominee. Political observers dey watch to see how di process go play out.
