Salihu Yakasai, wey be former Director-General of Media and Communications for Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, don officially resign from All Progressives Congress (APC) join African Democratic Congress (ADC). The man announce this move for him Facebook page on Monday after im talk say im consult with family, friends, and political associates. Yakasai write say, “After advising and contacting family and friends and other political activists, we have decided to join the ADC Party New Journey! Already, I submitted my exit letter from APC and registration in our new party ADC.”
This defection dey happen as ADC dey gain momentum for Nigeria politics. Just for mid-March 2026, the party welcome nine senators from different parties, making am look like strong opposition force ahead of 2027 general elections. Yakasai no be new person for party jumping; for 2022, im leave APC join Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) to contest as gubernatorial candidate for 2023 election before im return to APC.
Meanwhile, for Abia State, Don Norman Obinna, wey be Chairman of ADC for the state, don raise alarm say low Igbo membership registration fit cost former Governor of Anambra State Peter Obi the party presidential ticket. Obinna talk this matter over the weekend for Umuahia as special guest during inauguration of executive members of Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) for Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South Local Government Areas.
According to Obinna, Peter Obi, wey be former Labour Party Presidential candidate, no go win ADC presidential primary unless im get high number of votes. The ADC Chairman reveal say current chart of membership registration figures for ADC show say about 400,000 persons don register for Abia State so far, while Adamawa State dey approach 1 million. Obinna ask, “It is not just about wanting Peter Obi to be President, the question should be how do we deliver Peter Obi. Even the ADC online registration, Abia is about 400,000 in the chart, while Adamawa is about 1 million. If the primary election is conducted today, will Peter Obi win, that is my question.”
Obinna urge members of COPDEM and ADC members generally to drive sensitisation and insist on good governance and quality leadership. For the same event, Prince Solomon, wey be Chairman of COPDEM for Abia State, and Ogbonna Abarikwu, wey be House of Representatives aspirant for Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal constituency, charge Nigerians to reject bad leadership.
The political movements dey show how Nigerian politics dey shape up ahead of 2027 elections. As ADC dey try position itself as strong opposition party, the matter of membership registration dey become crucial factor for who go get party ticket. The case of Yakasai joining ADC from APC dey show say some politicians dey look for new platforms, while the concern about Igbo registration dey highlight regional political dynamics wey fit affect candidate chances.
For now, ADC dey continue with im online e-registration drive as different political actors dey position themselves for the coming political season. The party recent gains, including the defection of Yakasai and the nine senators, suggest say ADC dey become more attractive option for politicians wey dey look for alternative to the major parties.
