Nigeria Education Ministry Shake Curriculum Like Palm Wine for Better Learning

Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria – On 3rd September 2025, di Nigeria Ministry of Education don announce say dem dey revamp di curriculum for basic, senior secondary, and technical education. Na di Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and di Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad, wey yarn this one for Abuja. Dem say di main aim na to reduce subject overload wey dey make students dey waka like dem dey carry heavy load for head.

Di ministry no dey take dis matter lightly o! Dem consult with key stakeholders like di Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), WAEC, and NECO wey sabi plenty about education. Na after plenty talk wey dem gather, dem conclude sey e go better to cut some of di subjects wey students dey take. Dr. Alausa talk sey di new curriculum go start from di 2025/26 academic year. He also emphasize sey dis change go help both di students and di teachers to breathe small.

As e be now, students for Primary 1 to 3 go study a minimum of 9 subjects and maximum of 10; while dem for Primary 4 to 6 go take between 11 to 13 subjects. For Junior Secondary School (JSS) wey be JSS 1-3, dem go handle 12 to 14 subjects. But Senior Secondary School (SSS) go maintain 8 to 9 subjects, as dem dey focus more on core areas like Humanities, Sciences, Business, and one trade subject. Dem even state sey students go fit choose from three Nigerian languages: Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba.

Ah, and for di trade subjects, dem don cut down from over 30 to just six essential practical areas. Di available trades include Solar PV Installation and Maintenance, Fashion Design and Garment Making, Livestock Farming, Beauty and Cosmetology, Computer Hardware and GSM Repairs, and Horticulture and Crop Production. Na wa! E be like sey di education system wan turn to real-life skills training, no dey play again!

Professor Suwaiba Ahmad add sey even though subjects dey reduce, di quality of what students go learn go increase. Dem carry out this review because di Ministry wan make sure sey students dey not just cram but also sabi wetin dem dey learn. Dis announcement come when WAEC dey record di worst performance in five years. Talk about timing, abi?

One educationist, Dr. Harmony Mark-Ewa, don come out to hail di initiative as good development. She talk sey e good as di government dey try align di curriculum with wetin students really need for market. E go help di teachers know wetin dem dey teach dem, and students go get time to properly understand di subjects wey dem dey learn.

Dis na di first major review since di last time dem check am in 2011, and since den, different reforms don waka pass. Di former Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, don even drop hint on transitioning to 12-year basic education model. Na for di 2025 Extraordinary National Council of Education meeting wey take place for Abuja, Alausa talk sey dis shift go help align Nigeria’s education system with global standards. Dem dey try follow di gbalaga way, no be small!

As di world dey change, na im di Nigeria Ministry of Education dey try align di entire system to fit better with global need. Dis curriculum review no be just talk, but real change dey come, and e go surely shape wetin di future generation go learn. E be like sey students go finally get better chance to shine, and we dey here for am!
