The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and socio-political organization, Afenifere, don warn the Federal Government to beware of the recent economic advice from the World Bank. According to dem, following this advice blindly go fit spell disaster for Nigeria.
The World Bank advise say Nigeria must continue with its ongoing economic reforms for the next 10 to 15 years to become a leading economic power in sub-Saharan Africa and globally. However, Afenifere and NLC no agree with this plan.
Afenifere, through its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, talk say the current administration under President Bola Tinubu go don finish their term before the benefits of these reforms show. This mean say another administration go take the credit for any success, while the people suffer now.
Dem also remind us of countries like Mexico, Mozambique, Ghana, Argentina, Thailand, South Korea, Indonesia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which follow similar prescriptions and end up worse off. Malaysia even reject the idea because their Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohammed, say it go harm their economic growth and people’s welfare.
Afenifere commend President Tinubu’s efforts to reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks, enhance productivity and agriculture, and encourage entrepreneurship and innovations. But dem say these goals no fit be achieved with the current economic situation that dey make life hard for people.
Dem point out say the high cost of energy – fuel, electricity, gas, diesel, gasoline – dey force many people out of business and increase crime rate and insecurity. So, dem call for home-grown policies that go boost local businesses, encourage innovation, and reduce dependence on imported goods.
