WAEC Drop Performance: Naija Students No Fit Pass Again?

Abuja, Nigeria – E be like say our education system don pack belle, as WAEC just drop the 2025 WASSCE results wey carry serious yawa. This year, only 38.32% of 1,969,313 candidates fit grab credit for five subjects, wey include English and Mathematics. Na the worst performance wey Nigeria don see for a decade.

Dis one no be small matter o! Last time wey dem calculate pass rate like dis na 2014, when 31.28% pass. But dis year’s result dey show 33.8% decline from last year wey carry 72.12% pass rate. Chai! Wetin dey happen for our schools?

Dr. Amos Dangut, wey be WAEC National Office Head, talk say dem don introduce anti-cheat measures wey no gree give students free pass. He talk say dem don serialise the objective papers, meaning say dem fit catch people wey dey collude easily. How dem go sabi read when dem dey too busy dey form ‘expo’ from social media?

“Some students depend too much on these ‘expo’ materials from rogue websites, and most times, na scam dem dey sell.” Dangut still mention say 451,796 results dey still process due to wahala wey no concern the candidates, while 192,089 candidates get their results withheld for various cheating wahala.

As e be now, 1,718,090 candidates fit get credits wey include five subjects, but wetin concern us be say dem no dey count English and Mathematics among dem. If this na how candidates dey prepare, then we dey enter trouble!

With full Computer-Based Testing (CBT) wahala dey come in 2026, stakeholders dey hala say dem no sure if the students fit ready. Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa dey push for this CBT make sense, but no be serious wahala wey we dey see dem japa every year?

Haruna Danjuma, wey be President for Parents-Teachers Association, don open mouth say dis year’s results na poor performance, and na because students no dey prepare well. Public schools dey suffer, wey we know, and everywhere no dey conducive for students and teachers.

Prof. Francis Egbokhare talk say our education sector dey jaga-jaga and we no dey prioritise the quality of teachers and infrastructure. “Many of our graduates dey carry illiteracy like say na fashion,” e talk, and wey we sabi, if dem no fit mark correct punctuation, how dem wan pass exam? Na wah!

Dr. Bisi Akin-Alabi join the matter say the new anti-malpractice protocols dey force students make dem work hard. She ask for serious preparation, say make dem drop the reliance on glitches and leaks, before dem carry our future go bury for one corner.

As results dey drop like say e get Fela’s ‘Zombie’ play for classroom, education experts don dey shout say unless we fix teacher quality and the condition wey students dey learn, we dey set obodo Naija children up for catastrophe.
