Truck Weh Don Fall From Pen Cinema Bridge, Driver Injured

Lagos, Nigeria — A fully-loaded truck with registration number GGE 624 YJ fell off the Pen Cinema Bridge early Saturday morning, seriously injuring the driver. The accident disrupted traffic along the Agege–Old Abeokuta Road corridor.

Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), confirmed the incident, stating that the truck lost control while descending the bridge around 8:37 a.m. The heavy-duty truck then plunged off the elevated road, crashing onto two commercial buses that were parked below.

The driver, who suffered multiple fractures to both hands, was quickly rescued from the wreckage by LASTMA operatives and handed over to officers from the Elere Police Division. He was then rushed to the General Hospital in Ile-Epo for emergency treatment.

“The site was cordoned off to protect other road users and prevent secondary accidents,” Taofiq said in the statement. “LASTMA personnel acted swiftly to secure the area and redirect traffic.”

Responding to the incident, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, LASTMA’s General Manager, expressed concern over the rising number of accidents involving articulated vehicles. He urged truck drivers to be extra cautious, especially with the rainy season approaching. “It is crucial that drivers adhere to road safety regulations and utilize the speed-limiting devices mandated for commercial vehicles,” Bakare-Oki stated.

He also extended his best wishes for the injured driver’s swift recovery, emphasizing that safety should be a priority for all motorists.

LASTMA, in collaboration with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), worked to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow in the area. As investigations continue, LASTMA has advised residents to report traffic emergencies through their toll-free hotline: 0800 00 527 862.
