Tinubu Threat Waka, Wike Acknowledge Naija Unity for Better Abuja

ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu on Sunday reflected on how he once threatened to remove Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), over his development projects in Abuja and their implications for political success in 2027.

Tinubu spoke during the Salah homage by Wike and other senior government officials at the Presidential Villa. He recounted a significant conversation with Wike regarding the exclusion of the FCT from the Treasury Single Account (TSA).

The president praised Wike for his transformative ideas and efforts to boost development despite dwindling resources. Tinubu appreciated Wike’s initiatives aimed at liberating bureaucracies and making governance more efficient.

“When we started, he (Wike) came up with a lot of good ideas to liberate the bureaucracy and give opportunities to many who had been hindered by property rights,” Tinubu said.

He highlighted Wike’s work in reviving abandoned projects, improving healthcare facilities, and upgrading schools, crediting him for these achievements as a non-northern minister. “Surprisingly, Wike is not from the North. He’s from the southern part of Nigeria, and his ability to work effectively in the north reflects our diversity,” he remarked.

Tinubu emphasized that Nigerians must support one another in unity, especially during challenging times. He expressed gratitude for Wike’s efforts, stating, “Today, we live in peace, security is improving, and hunger is decreasing. Our people are looking for results and comfort.”

Wike reaffirmed the administration’s focus on the Renewed Hope Agenda, stating, “Despite our differing political backgrounds, we stand united in support of your leadership.” He acknowledged the president’s commitment to improving governance and service delivery in the FCT.

Wike mentioned significant improvements made since Tinubu’s administration began, highlighting the exit of the FCT from the TSA as a crucial step to enhance its governance structure. He invited Tinubu to the commissioning of new projects to mark two years of his administration.

Tinubu also urged Nigerians to embody the virtues learned during Ramadan by showing love and compassion to vulnerable groups, stressing the need to continue promoting charity beyond the holy month.

Abdulkadir Sholagberu, the Chief Imam of National Mosque, Abuja, led prayers and emphasized the importance of remaining committed to righteousness while maintaining harmony and cooperation. He cautioned against reverting to negative behaviors post-Ramadan.

This event marked Tinubu’s first Eid-el-Fitr celebration in Abuja since he took office. Key officials in attendance included Vice President Kashim Shettima, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
