LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA — Tina Knowles, the renowned matriarch and author, don share her experience about her divorce from ex-husband Richard Lawson for her new memoir ‘Matriarch’, wey drop last month.
In the book, Tina, wey be 71 years old, talk about the moment wey she decide to file for divorce at the age of 69 for July 2023. She say say significant part of her decision na the realization say the relationship no longer dey bring joy to her life.
Tina recount say one morning for July 2023, she just wake up and know say her marriage “need to end.” For the past 10 years of their union, she recognize Richard get “great qualities,” but she no feel say their relationship dey benefit both of dem anymore.
“I been don talk to am for some time about how I dey feel, but I realize say I deserve so much more,” she wrote. Tina emphasize say she “wan be happy” and she dey sure say she no go ever feel whole, cherished, loved, and respected for that relationship.
She also mention say she feel pressured to show others say dem fit find second chance for love, but she know say she need to choose herself first. “I make the decision to divorce with heavy heart, but totally without malice. I no don lose any night of sleep over am,” she wrote, as she compare her current sanity to the emotional pain wey follow her first marriage wey end for 2011.
Tina also talk say after she file for divorce, she dey enjoy her life and “thrive” as she focus on what dey bring her joy and security outside romance. She don build more self-confidence and she sabi say she go lead fulfilled life alone.
Despite some negative chatter online wey directed towards her, most of am coming from women, Tina begin reflect on times wey she self succumb to internalized sexism. “I realize say I fit use my journey to set positive example for others,” she said.
During the same month wey she file for divorce, she attend wedding of other prominent people and gain support from fellow guests like Perry, wey compliment her decision to prioritize her own happiness.
Around the time of her memoir release, Tina don start to spend time with someone wey she call a “very nice gentleman.” “I dey spend time with my friend. We go see wetin go happen,” she revealed.
