Supertubos Don Break, WSL Contest Na Wetin Dey Happen Dis Weekend!

Peniche, Portugal — Supertubos beach played host to the World Surf League’s Rip Curl Pro Portugal this past weekend, but conditions were a mixed bag for competitors after an epic week of freesurfing. While last week’s waves were well overhead, the contest saw the break change drastically.

During the opening rounds, including the Men’s Opening Round and Elimination Round, many surfers showed their skills but faced unexpected challenges as waves changed from the days leading up to the event. Contest organizers made a quick decision to run all available heats, indicating a less favorable forecast ahead.

“The conditions have been tricky, but we’re making the best of it,” said WSL event director. “It’s all about showcasing the talent, even when the waves aren’t cooperating.”

Supertubos is known for its powerful waves that rarely disappoint, and while surfers like the Colapinto brothers reveled in pre-contest sessions, the main event saw a drop in quality. Griffin Colapinto successfully advanced to the Round of 32 after leading his Opening Round heat, while his brother Crosby struggled in his first event back after injury, falling to Liam O’Brien.

“It felt great to be back out there,” Crosby said. “Even though I didn’t make it through, the freesurfing has been incredible, and I can’t wait to tackle my next chance.”

Despite not every surfer getting the ideal conditions during the contest, reports from the previous week hinted at the potential for ideal waves. “Even when it’s challenging, every time in the water teaches us something,” Griffin said, highlighting the joy of surfing itself outside competitive pressure.

As the competition continues, fans await to see if the surf conditions will improve, perhaps allowing a glimpse of what Supertubos can truly offer.
