Stellenbosch FC Shock Zamalek, Advance to CAF Cup Semi-Final!

Cairo, EgyptStellenbosch FC shocked the reigning champions Zamalek with a 1-0 victory on April 9, securing their spot in the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals. The match at the Cairo International Stadium saw Stellenbosch advance with a 1-0 aggregate score.

The Maroons, unchanged from their first-leg lineup, started strong, testing Zamalek early. An attempt by Genino Palace in the first half just went wide, showing their offensive intent.

Zamalek had more possession but struggled to break through Stellenbosch’s solid defense. Just before halftime, Seifeddine Jaziri’s header threatened to change the game but narrowly missed the target.

Stellenbosch made tactical changes at halftime, with Lesiba Nku and Chumani Butsaka coming on to add freshness to the midfield. Despite Zamalek’s pressure, the Maroons held firm with goalkeeper Sage Stephens making crucial saves.

As the match approached the final minutes, Stellenbosch struck decisively. Sihle Nduli found the back of the net with a low shot from a cross by Nku, sending the Stellenbosch fans into a frenzy.

“We planned well for this match. The team showed great resilience and character,” said Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker after the match. “This victory is a testament to our hard work.”

With this win, Stellenbosch FC joins Simba, RSB Berkane, and CS Constantine in the semi-finals of the competition. In other quarter-final matches, Simba edged past Al Masry in a penalty shootout, winning 4-1, while RSB Berkane defeated ASEC Mimosas, consolidating a 2-0 aggregate lead.

The round of quarter-finals concluded with CS Constantine overcoming USM Alger, also through penalties, securing their place with a 4-3 triumph.

Stellenbosch FC’s impressive performance highlights their determination to compete at the highest level on the continental stage, continuing to build momentum as they look forward to the next round.
