Spain Don Hammer Netherlands for UEFA Nations League Semi-Final!

VALENCIA, Spain — On March 23, 2025, Spain’s national soccer team triumphed over the Netherlands in a thrilling UEFA Nations League quarter-final, emerging victorious in a penalty shootout following a dramatic match that ended 5-5 on aggregate.

The contest kicked off with fire, as Mikel Oyarzabal converted a penalty just eight minutes into the game, putting Spain in the lead after he was fouled in the box. However, the Netherlands quickly responded through Memphis Depay, who leveled the score with another penalty in the second half of regular time.

Spain regained the lead when Oyarzabal found the back of the net again, tightening the tension as both teams exchanged dangerous attacks. Just 11 minutes before the end of regulation, Dutch debutant Ian Maatsen scored a spectacular equalizer, pushing the match into extra time.

In the extra frame, the spotlight shone on 17-year-old Lamine Yamal. He struck a beautiful goal to put Spain ahead 3-2, but the Netherlands didn’t back down, as Xavi Simons netted yet another penalty to bring the game to a shootout.

During the penalty shootout, nerves were high on both sides. Spain’s goalkeeper Unai Simon was a hero, saving Donyell Malen’s shot, which set the stage for Pedri, who calmly sealed the Spanish victory at 5-4 in penalties.

Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, praised his team for their endurance and depth, stating after the match, “This is a squad with great players… we have so many more [players] that could be here as well.”

The coach also acknowledged the turbulent conditions the community faced prior to the match, emphasizing the need for hope following devastating floods.

Meanwhile, Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman noted the exceptional talent of Yamal, saying, “You can never control him completely because of the quality he has.”

Spain’s victory paves the way for a semi-final clash against France, who also advanced past Croatia via penalties. With their exciting lineup, including rising stars like Yamal, Spain looks poised to continue their quest for glory this summer.
