Kogi State, Nigeria – Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan received a powerful welcome from her supporters on Tuesday while defying a government ban on rallies and public gatherings. People from Kogi Central’s five local government areas gathered early in Ihima, Okehi LGA, to welcome her with loud cheers as she touched down dramatically in a white helicopter.
As she addressed the crowd, Akpoti-Uduaghan dismissed the government’s restrictions, stating that her presence was simply a celebration of Sallah with her constituents. “Yesterday, we heard on the news that rallies and gatherings will not be allowed, that roads will be blocked, and convoys leading into the state will not be allowed,” she explained. “I knew that we were the targets. But then I said, this is not political season, this is not campaign time.”
She further emphasized, “We are not having a rally. This is just me, the Senator representing Kogi Central, coming down to her people to celebrate this festive time – Sallah with you, and there is nothing wrong with that. I am breaking no law. This is Nigeria. We have the right to be free, to express our choice in gatherings and celebrations.”
A curfew imposed by the Okehi LGA chairman and warnings from local police authorities created tensions around her arrival. Akpoti-Uduaghan has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Governor Yahaya Bello of being the masterminds behind any perceived security threats. Her recent suspension from the Senate amidst a sexual harassment scandal involving Akpabio has added to the belief that she is a victim of political persecution.
Additionally, a recall process is currently underway against the senator, further complicating her political standing. As Akpoti-Uduaghan continues to rally her support base, she remains defiant against the government’s efforts to suppress her activities.
This event marks a significant moment in Kogi State politics, indicating the lengths to which politicians may go to connect with their constituents, even under restrictive circumstances.
