LEIPZIG, Germany — As RB Leipzig prepare for an important Bundesliga match against Holstein Kiel on Saturday, they must secure victory to maintain their Champions League aspirations. Interim manager Zsolt Lőw is keenly aware of the stakes, with his team having not kept a clean sheet in four matches and surrendering seven goals during that period. Lőw highlighted the importance of Saturday’s clash, especially with Mainz 05 just two points behind in fifth place.
“Every match counts as we aim for a Champions League spot,” Lőw said. “We must deliver a strong performance at home and avoid dropping points against a team fighting to stay in the league.”
Holstein Kiel’s recent form highlights their struggle, having gained just one victory in their last twelve matches. In their last outing, a defeat against St. Pauli showcased their difficulties in defending set pieces.
“We need to tighten our defense if we want to have any hope against Leipzig,” said Kiel’s manager Marcel Rapp. “Every game is crucial now, and we aim to secure at least a draw to keep our hopes alive.”
This season, Kiel has been notoriously poor at defending set pieces, conceding 15 goals from such situations — only VfL Bochum has a worse record. With key injuries affecting their lineup, including the absence of defenders Patrick Erras and Lewis Holtby, Kiel will face an uphill battle.
Leipzig’s lineup will be slightly altered due to suspensions and injuries, with Xavi Simons absent and other key players recovering from injuries. Lőw is expected to field a forward line featuring Sesko and Openda, supported by a strong midfield duo.
