IBADAN, Nigeria — Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, former governor of Oyo State, has passed away at the age of 89, just days before his 90th birthday. His family released a statement on Sunday morning announcing his death, describing him as a mathematician, engineer, and renowned technocrat.
In the statement signed by Oladapo Ogunwusi, the family expressed their sorrow but also gratitude to God for Dr. Olunloyo’s impactful life. “With a heavy heart but gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the passing into glory of Dr. Victor Olunloyo,” the statement read.
Dr. Olunloyo was known for holding several prestigious positions, being the first Rector of both Ibadan Polytechnic and Kwara State Polytechnic. He was also recognized as the Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife. His contributions to education and governance left a significant mark on Nigeria.
The family noted, “His long record of service to the nation and humanity is a source of pride to his family and associates as we come to grips with this devastating event.” They requested the understanding of the media and the public as they prepare for his burial.
Rumors regarding the elder statesman’s death circulated as recently as April 2024. However, he dismissed those rumors during a visit from a correspondent, asserting, “I’m still here, not yet gone.” He shared concerns about the false reports, stating, “Who will live forever? Those breaking death news and the person presumed dead will all die one day.”
Dr. Olunloyo reflected on his family’s history with longevity, saying, “My father died at 42, while my mother died at 102. I’m 89. I’ve crossed the expected life age.” In June 2022, claims surfaced that he had died at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, which his family later refuted, describing him as being ill but alive.
As tributes flow in, many are remembering Dr. Olunloyo for his longstanding dedication to education and public service. The tributes highlight not only his professional achievements but also the personal impact he had on many individuals throughout his life.
