Na God We De Focus, How We Go Fit Follow Him Way?

Abeokuta, Nigeria — As Christians around the world mark the end of Lent, this Easter brings an urgent call for reflection and renewal in the face of societal upheaval. The resurrection of Jesus symbolizes a new beginning, and many church leaders emphasize that followers must connect deeply with its meaning during these trying times.

In his Easter message, the Bishop of Abeokuta Diocese, Most Rev. Peter Odetoyan, reminded the faithful that the resurrection of Christ is a testament to hope. “In the midst of despair, we must hold on to the promise of eternal life Jesus offers us,” he stated. This message rings particularly poignant as Nigeria grapples with escalating violence and economic hardship.

Odetoyan outlined practical ways that individuals can embody resurrection in their everyday lives. He urged Christians to engage actively in community service, echoing that true resurrection spirit lies in caring for one another. “This Easter, let us be agents of hope and peace, sharing not just in words, but through action as well,” he said.

Church attendance surged this Easter, with many flocking to services to commemorate the resurrection. In Ogun State, churches reported over 80% attendance compared to previous years amid ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. Worshippers participated in solemn morning services, followed by jubilant celebrations.

Young believers played a conspicuous role in this year’s celebrations, showcasing modern interpretations of traditional Easter songs and dramas that resonate with their generation. 19-year-old Sarah Obafemi, part of a youth choir at her church, stated, “It’s essential for us to make our faith relatable, especially during a time when many feel lost. Music and performance can bridge that gap and spread joy.”

Moreover, during the Easter Vigil last night, many churches noted their commitment to helping members through ongoing struggles, particularly the youth, who face significant challenges in the current socio-economic landscape. Organizations such as the ‘Youth Hope Initiative’ are gathering support to provide scholarships and mentorship programs, fostering a more resilient generation.

Abeokuta’s community embraces this season of renewal with charity drives, feeding initiatives, and support for families impacted by violence and hunger, reinforcing the principle that one thrives when they uplift others as a testament to Christ’s teachings.

As celebrations continue, church leaders echo the sentiment that the resurrection is not an end but a catalyst for spiritual rebirth. Nigerians are urged to remain steadfast in their faith, embrace the spirit of resurrection, and embody the principles of love and service in their communities.

As the echo of church bells fades into the Shomolu skyline, the message for this Easter is clear — rise to the occasion, transform lives, and take action towards a better tomorrow, aligning with the spirit of resurrection.
