Brisbane, Australia – On Friday night, Macarthur FC delivered a stunning 5-1 defeat to Brisbane Roar in Round 25 of the Isuzu UTE A-League at Suncorp Stadium. Asumah Abubakar gave Roar a brief lead, but a hat-trick from Marin Jakolis alongside goals from Jake Hollman and Harrison Sawyer sealed the visitors’ emphatic victory.
The match kicked off with intensity, and Saif-Eddine Khaoui nearly opened the scoreline in the 25th minute. His powerful shot from the edge of the box followed a cut-back from Frans Deli, but it didn’t find the back of the net. A promising attack from Dean Bosnjak also fell short as he shot directly at goalkeeper Matt Acton. Moments later, Jakolis missed a chance to score from the rebound.
Abubakar stunned the crowd in the 28th minute. He received a well-timed through ball from Keegan Jelacic and struck a first-time finish into the bottom corner, marking his debut goal at Suncorp Stadium. Just minutes later, he was close to doubling the lead but hit the post instead.
As the game approached halftime, Macarthur turned the tide. A critical turnover by Luke Brattan set up Khaoui and Jakolis to combine at the top of the box. Jakolis leveled the game, slipping his shot into the corner just before the whistle.
Ten minutes into the second half, Jakolis delivered again, this time capitalizing on a through ball from Khaoui. He skillfully rounded Acton and placed the ball into the net, giving the Bulls a 2-1 lead. Substitute Jake Hollman added a third goal in the 68th minute by heading home from Brattan’s free kick.
Jakolis wasn’t done yet; he completed his hat-trick just five minutes later, finishing a cross from Kealey Adamson with a volley at the back post. To cap off an impressive performance, Harrison Sawyer scored the Bulls’ fifth goal during stoppage time, rising above defenders to head the ball home.
With this loss, Brisbane Roar’s coach Ruben Zadkovich will need to regroup his team as they prepare for their next match against Melbourne City at AAMI Park next Friday, the second to last away game of the season.
