Heidenheim Go Fight FC Bayern Again: E Be Possible!

HEIDENHEIM, GermanyHeidenheim coach Frank Schmidt believes his team can clinch a victory against FC Bayern Munich this Saturday after their surprise 3-2 win last season.

“It shows it is possible,” Schmidt said in a “Sky” interview ahead of the match. “We need to play boldly, with the greatest passion, and bring emotions into the game.” Schmidt expressed confidence in his team’s ability to challenge any opponent if they commit fully to the match.

Heidenheim managed to trouble Bayern even as a second-tier team during a 4-5 loss in the DFB-Pokal quarterfinals in 2019. In reflection, Schmidt noted he told club president Holger Sanwald, “We’ll attack them; we’ll go all out. I’ve always believed in taking risks rather than playing it safe.”

However, Schmidt acknowledged that they cannot afford to be careless, referencing their 0-3 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt last week. “Courage must be combined with passion and determination; that way, we can challenge the giants,” he affirmed, emphasizing that their aim is to achieve, not simply to survive.

Meanwhile, the match presents an opportunity for young talent Paul Wanner, who previously made headlines as the youngest player to score in the Bundesliga. Though his recent performances have not been as remarkable, Schmidt believes Wanner has the potential to bounce back strongly.

“He must learn to handle setbacks,” Schmidt said, indicating that the pressure on Wanner is immense as the team grapples with relegation fears. He continued, “In our battle for survival, we rely on solid defense and quick transitions.”

With spotlights on Heidenheim this Saturday, the coach is hopeful that Wanner can show a blend of aggression and skill against his former club. He advised, “Even though it might hurt some feelings, I want him to prove himself and then apologize later.”
