ABUJA, Nigeria — Aloy Ejimakor, special counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, wey be leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), don react sharply to comments made by the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, wey talk say Nigerians need to take responsibility for their own security.
For public engagement on Tuesday, Ajayi make am clear say the military, police, and other security agencies no fit protect every community from terrorist attacks wey don dey happen across Nigeria. He refer to how local communities for Bauchi State fit fight Boko Haram insurgents without waiting for help from the security forces.
“Webi say communities suppose dey serve as the first line of defence against terrorists and other criminals,” Ajayi talk.
Even as Ajayi dey stress on the need for self-defence, Ejimakor no like the double standard for how the Nigerian government dey handle the matter. He remind Ajayi say Kanu dey detained and dey face prosecution for making similar comments wey lead to the ban of IPOB and wey label many Igbos as terrorists.
Ejimakor post for social media say, “Defend yourselves” na the same thing MAZI NNAMDI KANU talk wey dem twist to justify his extraordinary rendition, charge him for ‘incitement of violence.’ It also lead to the proscription of IPOB & the hounding of young Igbos as terrorists. #Injustice.
Ajayi even quote former military leader General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.) as a supporter of community-led resistance, saying we need to rethink our approach to self-defence.
Kanu, wey don dey agitate for the creation of the state of Biafra, don face strong opposition from the Nigerian government for his belief. Dem don label IPOB as a terrorist organization since 2017 after clashes between its members and security forces.
Kanu don dey detained since wey dem capture am for Kenya in 2021 and bring am back to Nigeria. Despite court orders wey order his release, he still dey for DSS custody, wey don raise serious concerns from human rights groups and international bodies.
Ejimakor’s reaction fit show the frustration of many Nigerians wey dey question why government officials dey encourage self-defence while one person dey face serious consequences for talking about the same issue.
