KARIEGA, Eastern Cape, South Africa — Deputy President Shiphokosa Paulus Mashatile go deliver keynote address on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa for the 2025 Human Rights Day event. This special event go happen for Friday, 21 March 2025, for the Derrick Ferreira Stadium.
The theme for this year’s Human Rights Day celebration na “Deepening a Culture of Social Justice and Human Rights.” This theme dey call on all members of society to renew and strengthen their commitment to tackle issues like poverty, high cost of living, and to promote job creation.
Human Rights Day for South Africa dey commemorated every 21 March to remember the Sharpeville Massacre wey happen for 1960, when apartheid police kill 69 peaceful protesters. This day also dey honor 35 people wey die on the same date in 1985 during brutal police actions after a funeral at Uitenhage and KwaLanga.
Government choose Kariega, Eastern Cape to host this year’s national event as part of efforts to make sure communities across the country fit pay tribute to those wey fight for liberation. This event go also reflect on the progress wey don happen towards building a non-racial and democratic nation.
