Colorado Rapids 2 Don Match St. Louis CITY2, Earn First Win Dis Season

ST. LOUIS, MO — Colorado Rapids 2 finally score their first win of the season, defeating St. Louis CITY2 1-0 on Saturday night at Energizer Park. The match took place on April 6, 2025, with Kimani Stewart-Baynes netting the winning goal just before halftime.

After entering the match with a record of 1-1-1, Rapids 2 aimed to build momentum against the Western Conference leaders, who boasted a solid start to their season with an unbeaten record of 3-1-1. Colorado was coming off a bye week after a challenging draw against Real Monarchs where they led early but faltered, ending in a 2-2 tie.

The game kicked off with both teams creating chances, but it was the Rapids who broke the deadlock in the 45th minute. Following a turnover from CITY2 in midfield, Colton Swan led a swift counterattack, sending a cross to Stewart-Baynes, who struck from around 20 yards out. His goal marked not just the game-winner, but also his first professional goal in the MLS NEXT Pro league.

“To score my first goal at this level is huge for me,” Stewart-Baynes said post-match. “We worked hard for this win, and I’m proud of the team for overlooking pressure throughout the game.”

In the second half, St. Louis pressed for an equalizer but found themselves down a player after Brendan McSorely received a second yellow card, forcing CITY2 to finish the match with only 10 men. Despite their efforts, the Rapids defense, led by goalkeepers Adam Beaudry and Zack Campagnolo, stood resolute against the onslaught.

Late in the game, Beaudry received a red card for a foul outside the box, allowing Campagnolo to step in as a replacement. “Zack was fantastic when he came in. He showed composure under pressure,” said Rapids 2 coach. “The whole team stepped up defensively to protect our lead.”

Rapids 2 showcased their resilience, holding off numerous attempts during nine minutes of stoppage time to secure their first victory of the 2025 season. They now sit at 4 points from a 1-1-1 record.

Next, Rapids 2 head to Portland to face the Timbers 2 on April 13, where they aim to continue their newfound momentum. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. MT with coverage available on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV.
