GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands — Cayman Art Week (CAW) dey celebrate five years of bringing local artists, collectors, and art lovers together from May 20 to May 25, 2025. Dis year go showcase over 40 different art activities wey go highlight Caymanian creativity.
According to Maia Muttoo, Education Manager at National Gallery of the Cayman Islands, dis initiative don grow from just supporting artists into a vibrant commercial platform. She noted, ‘There were a few natural resources that Caymanians would be exporting out of the country — things like silver thatch, turtles, and mahogany trees. These were people constantly engaged in the act of making.’
Muttoo explain say, ‘There hasn’t been an industry of art, per se, supported by financial and cultural backing, but this is the gap that Cayman Art Week starts to fill.’ She emphasize how initiatives like CAW dey help develop art practices wey fit make economic impact for artists.
Dis year, CAW go give art enthusiasts chance to discover di islands’ unique heritage and artistic flair, while promoting appreciation and collection of regional art. From costs-free access to art galleries to various expressions such as painting, sculpture, digital art, and installations, everybody fit participate.
Kerri-Anne Chisholm, di creative mind behind Gram Bella‘s project space, highlight di importance of visibility for emerging artists. ‘One of di reasons I launched my project was to give artists visibility and space to explore,’ she share, emphasizing di necessity for spaces wey go enhance artist visibility.
Chisholm go allow artists who no get studio space to submit their work, saying, ‘I noticed a lot of artists say, ‘I don’t have a studio, I practice in my house.’ She also explain how Gram Bella’s provides opportunities for local artists to showcase their talent and connect with the public.
CAW dey encourage conversations about art’s role in society through various activities like open studios and curated tours. Dem also organize hop-on/hop-off bus tours from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. to help visitors explore galleries. Muttoo describe di bus tour nights as lively, saying, ‘It’ll feel like a mini opening event at each location.’
Visitors no need booking for di buses, and guests fit choose to walk or drive to different venues if dem prefer. For guests who wan take di ultimate art trip, flights from Grand Cayman to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman dey available through Cayman Airways, with round-trips averaging between $150 and $200.
