Boston, Massachusetts — For every day during Lent, Bishop Edward Malesic shares his reflections on scripture. Today, we honor St. Joseph, the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and adoptive father of Jesus, highlighting his role and importance within the Christian faith.
Bishop Malesic noted that while St. Joseph isn’t extensively detailed in scripture, his impact on the Holy Family remains significant. “St. Joseph took Mary as his wife during a miraculous moment of divine intervention, exhibiting his faith and trust in God,” he said in his reflection.
He recounted how Joseph brought Mary safely to Bethlehem, fulfilling an ancient prophecy, and fled to Egypt with his family to escape danger. “As an immigrant, he sought safety for his family amidst turmoil,” Malesic emphasized, showcasing Joseph’s resilience and dedication.
Further, Bishop Malesic highlighted Joseph’s role in educating Jesus in the Jewish traditions. “Joseph introduced Jesus to the faith, taking him to synagogue and teaching him vital rituals, while also imparting the skills of a tradesman,” he said.
The bishop stressed the qualities St. Joseph symbolizes, including trust, courage, and love. “God chose Joseph because of these attributes; he teaches us what it means to be a faithful father and community member,” he stated.
Reflecting on Joseph’s uncertainties regarding God’s plan, Bishop Malesic captured the essence of Joseph’s faith: “He didn’t know the full picture but willingly accepted the responsibilities of being Mary’s husband and Jesus’s father.”
As today’s reflection wraps up, Malesic encouraged the faithful to emulate St. Joseph’s example: “We must also listen for God’s call, act with fidelity, and follow our own paths with love and courage.”
The bishop’s reflections can be read daily for spiritual growth throughout Lent. For those interested in receiving updates and further information, they can subscribe through the diocese’s channels.
