BILBAO, Spain — Athletic Club extended their unbeaten run in LaLiga to 13 games with a 3-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, coming from behind to secure the win at San Mamés Stadium.
After three consecutive draws across all competitions, including a goalless stalemate in the UEFA Europa League against Rangers, Athletic was eager to get back to winning ways. Rayo Vallecano, also pursuing European qualification, posed an early threat with Pedro Díaz‘s header missing the target in the first minute.
Both teams exchanged chances in the opening 25 minutes, with Mikel Jauregizar failing to convert for Athletic, and Álvaro García doing the same for Rayo. However, the visitors struck first shortly after the half-hour mark.
Following a foul by Dani Vivian on García, a VAR review awarded Rayo a penalty. Pedro Díaz’s initial kick was saved by Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simón, but he capitalized on the rebound, giving Rayo a 1-0 lead at the break.
The second half started with renewed intensity from Athletic. Their persistence paid off when they earned a penalty after Maroan Sannadi was fouled by Alfonso Espino off the ball. After another VAR check, the decision was confirmed, and Athletic equalized through substitute player Oihan Sancet, who calmly converted the spot kick.
Coach Ernesto Valverde opted to rest some key players, keeping an eye on the upcoming Europa League clash. However, his substitutes made an impact, as Sancet soon completed the turnaround with a magnificent curled shot into the net from a tight angle.
Rayo’s coach, Iñigo Pérez, attempted to adjust his strategy, but his team struggled to regain momentum after going behind. The match concluded with Sancet completing a brace in injury time, launching a beautiful strike just outside the box into the corner.
Following this win, Rayo Vallecano finds themselves in a tough spot, trailing Real Betis by six points for the sixth position. They have now won just one of their last seven matches. Meanwhile, Athletic Club looks forward to their return leg against Rangers brimming with confidence.
