ASUU Don Ready to Shutdown School, Government No Wan Hear Word

Abuja, Nigeria – E be like say dis time, ASUU dey ready to put school for ground again. Less than one week to their planned nationwide strike, dem don start to mobilize members across all universities for Naija. Na so e be, dem dey vex for government wey dey behave like say dem no sabi anytin since dem don collect dem ultimatum. (Sometimes, I dey wonder wetin dem dey smoke for that government house.)

Last Monday, ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) don talk say dem go shut down public universities to pursue dia demands, especially after dem notice say government no do anything. Dem tell all relevant bodies, including the Minister of Labour, Maigari Dingyadi, say if government no show face after two weeks, strikes go commence o! By now, dem don send letter wey ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, write to all branches, saying dem dey disappointed, as no tangible progress don come from government. (I mean, wetin be all dis wahala sef? Na just to sign paper, e no dey too hard now.)

Piwuna talk say dem ratified the decision for a two-week warning strike, if dem no see anything wey go make sense. “E be like say we don tire for all this gist wey no dey lead anywhere,” he talk for di letter wey dem send out.

“We don dey negotiate since February 2025, and our patience don dey wear thin. We dey ask government to come sign this renegotiated agreement wey dey hold too long! If dem no act fast, na to shut down universities we go go, and we no go watch o!”

This moment wey ASUU dey enter, dem talk say dem need all members to join body for this fight, so no be play matter. Dem dey encourage all academic staff say everybody suppose dey involved. (After all, na dem go chop the wahala if dem no act.)

As strike nears, students com dey look say wetin go happen next. Some of dem dey yarn say them dey ready to join ASUU if e reach the point. Others dey just dey chill, wan see how e go play out because dem never ready to lose dem semester. (Who wan hear say dem go waste another semester for house na?)

We fit recall say na so ASUU don dey flex dem muscles before, but whether dis one go lead to any meaningful outcome, na another matter. The union don always spread the message say “We dey strong when we organize, but when we dey agonize, we dey weak.” E na strong words wey mean say unity na di key.

As we dey follow this developing story, make we keep our ears to ground and see wetin government go talk in response. Na only time go tell wether peace go reign for university, or wahala go continue. (All dis tension fit just be di start of another long academic holiday.)
