Abuja, Nigeria – E be like say wahala fit don show face again for our universities as Federal Government don drop fresh proposal wey dem dey call 40% salary increase for ASUU lecturers. Na as dem prepare to gather again ne with the government delegation led by Yayale Ahmed. The ASUU leadership don gather for National Executive Council (NEC) meeting wey happen on Sunday for Abuja, and branch leaders go carry the gist follow their members across the country (dis one go make body hot o).
One member wey no wan show face, talk say dem go still dey chop the matter with the government next week. “Dem don propose 40% increment. Na so branch leaders go carry the matter come back make e reach everybody for their side. Negotiations be like say no go end anytime soon,” the source talk.
Dem don already feel tension for this matter because ASUU get one-month ultimatum wey don finish last Saturday. Na why the government quickly call ASUU leaders make dem meet for Abuja on Monday, wey turn to Tuesday. Both sides no wan carry the gist go public because of some negotiation rules wey dey guide dem (chai, this one na serious matter o).
ASUU don dey vex before because of the government’s nonchalant attitude towards their demands. Key issues wey dey on ground na review of 2009 ASUU-FG agreement, payment of outstanding salaries and allowances, plus that revitalisation fund wey don dey long overdue. Dr. Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, wey dey outside the country right now, dey insist say the government don meet ASUU demands already. He no wan hear anything about strike, as he dey follow President Bola Tinubu directive to make sure say students no dey miss class.
“As I dey talk to you, the President don talk say no strike for public universities, and we dey do everything wey dey possible to keep our students for school,” Alausa yarn, as e dey try to cool things down. But wetin be this? Last last strike last about six days, and e no suppose happen at all, according to am.
Meanwhile, Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) don show support for ASUU. Dem don talk say if government no gree act sharp-sharp, dem go show am pepper. This new proposal dey shine as one of the best moves wey government don use to calm the storm and keep students wey dey school inside campus as negotiations dey continue.
If ASUU no fit get wetin dem dey find soon, e fit mean say we go dey ready for another strike saga wey fit no nice at all for students and their families. Abeg, make dem sabi wetin dem dey do o!
