LAGOS, Nigeria — Apple dey plan to drop charging ports for one of dem iPhone models, now e get confirmation from EU say e no go cause wahala. The tech giant don think about making the iPhone 17 Air no get USB-C port, but dem shelved the idea because dem fear say EU regulators go no gree.
According to Federica Miccoli, wey be European Commission press officer, any device wey no get wired charging port no need to follow the USB-C standard. “Since such radio equipment cannot be recharged via wired charging, it does not need to incorporate the harmonised (wired) charging solution,” she explain.
This new understanding open door for Apple to create the first portless iPhone without worrying about breaking any laws. E make sense say Apple first consider this move since dem don already switch from their Lightning port to USB-C in compliance with EU laws dem wey wan reduce electronic waste.
When the Common Charger Directive come out, EU don dey focus on make one universal charging port for all devices to prevent people from carrying multiple chargers around. Apple don dey use USB-C for Mac and iPads, but dem still hold on to Lightning for iPhones, until the law push dem to change.
As the January 2025 deadline dey close, only iPhone SE and iPhone 14 still dey carry Lightning port. Dem rumors don surface before sey Apple fit drop wired charging completely come 2025, and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman talk sey dem originally plan to make the iPhone 17 Air portless.
Gurman still note sey Apple don finally decide say dem no go move ahead with the portless design for now, still including USB-C connector for the upcoming model. Even though USB-C still dey, there don dey discussion about going fully wireless for charging and syncing.
Miccoli add sey, as per EU law, devices fit run on full wireless charging without having to include any wired charging option. This mean sey Apple fit market the iPhone wey no need port at all for EU. Na good news for fans wey dey look forward to more advanced wireless technology.
Not be small thing, making portless iPhone reality go also depend on how fast e go take penetrate the market. Charging standards fit change, and technology go continue to develop. Apple don donate the MagSafe standard to Wireless Power Consortium, which don help to make the technology more accessible.
For now, consumers fit expect to see the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air with USB-C and MagSafe charging coming this September. But wetin go happen in the future? A fully portless iPhone fit still happen, but we go need to hold on for now.
With dis new law framework, Apple fit dive into wireless era without fear of EU giving problems. As preferences dey shift toward wireless devices, e go be interesting to see how other brands go follow Apple lead.
