ROMA, Italy – Antonio Tempestilli, a legend in AS Roma‘s history, has dedicated over 30 years to the club. From being a defender to team manager and youth coach, Tempestilli embodies the spirit of football in Italy.
Tempestilli, who first debuted in Serie A with Inter in 1981, joined AS Roma in 1987. Over six seasons, he made 120 appearances and scored five goals, forging a deep connection with the giallorossi colors.
“My love for Roma started on the pitch and has only grown since,” he said during our interview. “I have spent more than half of my professional life here, and it’s like family to me.”
After retiring as a player, Tempestilli took on various roles within the club, including coaching the youth teams. In the 1995-1996 season, his dedication helped lead the youth squad to become Italian champions.
In 1996, he took on the role of team manager and eventually became the club’s organizational director. His extensive experience has given him a unique perspective on the current state of AS Roma.
When asked about the current team’s performance, Tempestilli stated, “Roma is definitely on the rise, but they face challenges ahead. The loss of Dybala is significant; he was a key player for our attack. We need to find a way to adjust.”
Regarding potential replacements, he acknowledged the difficulty in filling such an important role. “Dybala brought a light to the field every match, and losing him means we need to adapt quickly,” he noted.
Tempestilli believes the future of the team also depends on leadership decisions. “Whoever succeeds after Ranieri needs the full support of the ownership and a clear vision of the future. Not all coaches can work with the same plans,” he added.
Beyond his influence in the club, he is also enjoying life post-retirement. “I live a healthy life now, spending time with my family and still watching every Roma game,” he shared with a smile.
Reflecting on his career, Tempestilli recalled his debut as a professional. “That day was a dream come true. I remember being 19 and stepping onto the field. It felt like touching the sky,” he said.
When asked what he might have done differently, he replied, “Maybe I wouldn’t have left Roma. Looking back, my decisions were sometimes made in haste.”
His bond with AS Roma remains strong, stating, “Even now, I feel a deep love for the club. After being here for over three decades, it’s part of who I am.”
On a final note, he addressed the importance of passion within the club. “We need professionals who understand the essence of being Roman and not just see the club as a business.”
“I hope the ownership realizes this,” he concluded, highlighting the need for commitment to the team’s heritage and culture.
