Senate don set up committee to investigate allegations wey NDLEA bring against Senator Oyelola Ashiru, wey be Deputy Leader of the Senate. NDLEA accuse Ashiru of stocking and distributing hard drugs, and dem say his house for GRA Ilorin dey use as drug joint.
The allegation come after Ashiru contribute to debate on floor of Senate on October 15, 2024, where he call on NDLEA to review its operations and tackle internal corruption. Ashiru support bill to establish National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation, which some senators see as attempt to duplicate NDLEA duties.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa, through spokesman Femi Babafemi, say Ashiru’s house was raided on February 4, 2024, and two of his aides, Ibrahim Mohammed and Muhammed Yahaya, were arrested. NDLEA also claim say another aide, Oluwatosin Odepidan, was arrested in Offa for dealing in illicit drugs like methamphetamine and cannabis.
Ashiru deny all allegations, describing dem as “smear” campaign. He say he no know or identify any hard substances and he no drink alcohol or any other thing apart from water. Senate President Godswill Akpabio set up six-member ad hoc committee headed by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe to investigate the matter.
The committee expected to submit its report within one week. Ashiru urge Senate to take action, saying the allegation be infringement on his person and his privilege as sitting senator.
