On Sunday night, October 20, a tense incident unfolded in Phoenix, Arizona, resulting in the death of a suspect and injuries to two police officers. The incident occurred near 37th and Glendale avenues around 8:15 p.m.
According to Phoenix Police Sgt. Phil Krynsky, officers responded to reports of a man armed with a knife who was trespassing inside a Dollar Tree store. When the officers arrived, an employee directed them to the suspect, who then ran to the store’s storage area and jumped on top of a cooler.
A physical altercation ensued when the suspect jumped down from the cooler, leading to a fight between the suspect and the two officers. During the struggle, the suspect allegedly grabbed one of the officer’s stun guns and pointed it at an officer, prompting the officers to open fire.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, while the two officers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and have since been released.
This incident marks the second officer-involved shooting in the Valley on Sunday, following an earlier incident involving Chandler police.
