The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, don announce say dem go hold public hearing to find out why the national grid dey collapse often. Dis decision come after the grid collapse multiple times recently, causing widespread power outages across the country.
According to NERC, the public hearing go hold on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at the Commission’s Hearing Room, Fourth Floor, Plot 1387, Cadastral Zone A00, Central Business District, Abuja. The hearing go start by 10:00 am sharp. NERC invite all stakeholders from the power sector, civil society organisations, and the general public to attend the hearing.
The recent grid disturbances, which include three collapses in just one week, don cause serious concern. NERC say the latest collapse happen because of an explosion of a current transformer at the Jebba transmission station at 8:15 am on Saturday. This explosion lead to a cascade of power plants shutdown due to load loss. However, efforts to restore power supply have been successful, with power significantly restored in 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory by 1:00 pm.
NERC also mention say dem dey work on unbundling the System Operator function (ISO) from the Transmission Company of Nigeria Plc, as part of the Electricity Act 2023. Dem believe say this go help improve grid management and attract more investment in infrastructure.
The repeated grid failures have raised serious concerns about the stability of the national grid and its ability to provide consistent power supply. NERC hope say the public hearing go help identify both immediate and underlying causes of these disturbances and find a permanent solution.
