Lagos assures support for construction industry growth

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu says his administration will continue to support the construction industry.

According to him, it will do so by planning, coordinating and facilitating strategic investment in infrastructure to lay foundation for long term growth.

This is contained in a statement on Tuesday by Mr Adeshina Odunuga, spokesman of the Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.

Odunuga said the governor, represented by his Special Adviser on Works and infrastructure, Mrs Aramide Adeyoye, said this at the Official Opening Ceremony of Big 5 Construct Nigeria, in Victoria Island, Lagos.

The Big 5 construct Nigeria is West Africa’s largest annual event drawing participants including buyers, suppliers, influencers, decision makers and innovators, experts and educators from NIgeria and beyond.

The year 2022 event had investors from various countries including Kuwait, Turkey, Dubai, China, Saudi Arabia.

The Special Adviser said Lagos State was fortunate to host global experts in view of the importance of the construction sector.

She said it was important in achieving sustainable socio-economic development in a fast-growing and highly competitive economy as Lagos.

According to her, Lagos State has a target to generate a strong economic base for the productivity of the people with its attendant impact on employment and innovation.

Adeyoye said it also  had a target to become the preferred investment destination in Africa.

She said, “without adequate and quality infrastructure, it will be impossible to create jobs at the rate required to engage the growing population of our youth.

“It is therefore not surprising that the exhibition of this magnitude is happening in the city of Lagos.

”She commended conveners of “the Big 5 construct Nigeria” for sustaining the annual exhibition.

Adeyoye described it as an excellent platform to network with professionals, visitors, exhibitors and construction industry experts.

Also speaking during a session of the Chartered Institute of Builders Masterclass, Mr Adeniyi Andrew, Project Coordinator, South West, Royal Builders, emphasised the importance of Quality Control and ISO standardisation in the sector.

Rwanda Economic Update: Boosting Exports Through Technology, Innovation and Trade in Services

The new Rwanda Economic Update, released today, reveals that, after a strong economic recovery last year, Rwanda's GDP growth is expected to be moderate in 2022 due, in part, to the effects of the war in Ukraine and the persistent risk of COVID-19.

    19 pandemic in major economies.

According to the 19th edition of the Rwanda Economic Update (REU19), entitled Boosting exports through technology, innovation and trade in services, GDP growth is projected at 6% by 2022, after reaching 11% in 2021.

Inflation continues to rise as international commodity prices rise and disruptions to global supply chains have led to substantial increases in energy, transportation and food prices.

“Rising inflation in Rwanda, coming at a time when employment has yet to recover to pre-pandemic levels, has the potential to undo hard-won gains in terms of poverty reduction and development of the economy.

    human capital.

Government interventions to protect the most vulnerable, building on the country's social safety nets, continue to be critical,” said Rolande Pryce, World Bank Country Manager for Rwanda.

In its special focus on trade, the report provides insight into Rwanda's export performance.

The REU19 notes that Rwandan companies have increased their participation in international trade (particularly in services) over the last decade, to levels that exceed those of their regional and continental peers.

Analyzing the main drivers of trade performance, the report highlights that obtaining certification to an international quality standard, such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certificate, is a critical factor in facilitating companies' participation in trade.

    international.

ISO certified companies are 36% more likely to be exporters.

However, this remains a significant challenge for Rwanda, as only 3% of Rwandan companies had achieved ISO certification in 2019.

REU19 also shows a significant correlation between e-commerce adoption in Rwanda and participation in the international trade and noted its limited use.

    by Rwandan companies.

“The strong link between e-commerce and exporting, and the lack of information on foreign markets regularly cited by companies in Rwanda, suggests that investment in Internet infrastructure can provide isolated companies, such as those in rural and urban underdeveloped areas, low-cost connectivity.

to markets and customers, and increase the participation of local companies in international trade,” said Calvin Djiofack, Country Economist at the World Bank. According to REU19, Rwanda has placed great emphasis on developing services to increase employment, income and export earnings.

However, the country faces a skills deficit that, if not addressed, will limit the potential growth of highly specialized services exports.

One of the measures the report recommends to boost opening up to trade in services is for Rwanda to address its short-term skills shortage by recognizing the qualifications of regional professionals and abolishing work permit regimes for them.

CSCS reiterates commitment to cybersecurity awareness

The Managing Executive Officer of Central Securities Clearing System Plc, Jalo-Waziri Haruna, has reteirated the company’s commitment to continuous sensitisation on cyberattacks.

Haruna said this at a news conference, on Thursday in Lagos, ahead of the 3rd annual Cybersecurity Conference with the theme, “Future of Cybersecurity: Emerging Issues and Solutions.

” According to him, the annual conference is one of the ways the organisation creates awareness and facilitates knowledge exchange on cybersecurity.

Haruna said cyber-security remained a top priority for the board of directors of the organisation, as a key risk which needed to be given attention.

He said, “Nigeria, and the market infrastructure, is no different as we begin to interconnect amongst APIs, databases, social transactions perspective, to transactional perspective to even a communication perspective.

“We need to make sure that we understand the risks that exist in our market and try to bring out issues with policymakers, participants, experts, to understand what the issues are and proffer solutions.

” The CSCS boss noted that Nigerians should be conscious of the fact that cyber-security had moved beyond just the financial industry.

“Cybersecurity is a key aspect of how the world is going to live, not just financial services or financial markets.

“As you know, open banking has come in, open finance, open API’s interconnectivity across everyone.

“Cybersecurity becomes top requirement and it’s critical as we deliver services, deliver products, as we live our lives.

“Take a look at maybe smart homes, smart offices, working from home; all of these things are part of life.

We can’t do anything about them.

It’s the way the world is going,” Haruna said.

He, therefore, said it was important and critical to protect oneself from intrusions and disturbances within the system itself.

Haruna also said CSCS was ahead in terms of standardisation compliance, ISO 27 001 for global best practice in data security.

He said, “We can say that we are fairly meeting standards now.

“Certainly we try as much as possible within our own system to be able to build resilience in case it happens and then build protection so that it doesn’t happen from external perspective.

” The CSCS cybersecurity conference, slated for Oct, 27,  is an exclusive high-profile business networking event that brings together leading cybersecurity industry professionals, government officials, financial institutions, telecommunication companies and industry regulators.

The conference focuses on discussion on the significance of keeping cyber vigilance on varying degrees of business technology touchpoints for data exchange.

The conference will be held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotels in Abuja on  Oct.27, with the collaboration of renowned private and public sector institutions.

Veterinary authorities in Cameroon fight ruminant diseases using nuclear-derived techniques

Babi Dairou lost a third of her goat herd in 2019, when a viral disease that attacked small ruminants such as sheep and goats spread through northern Cameroon.

And he was among the better off, Dairou said, as many of his neighbors lost all their animals to the devastating disease, known by its scientific name of peste des petits ruminants (PPR).

But now the goats of this factory worker and part-time farmer, as well as those of others in his village, are safe from the disease, thanks to a mass vaccination campaign under the PPR Global Eradication Program , supported by the IAEA, the Food and Agriculture Agency.

United Nations Organization (FAO) and World Organization for Animal Health.

PPR is endemic in the region (its spread is facilitated by the movement of wild animals and domesticated herds across borders) and, despite previous control campaigns, has returned to Cameroon.

In the north, where a narrow strip of Cameroonian territory cuts off the southern edge of the Sahel, the borders with Chad to the east and Nigeria to the west are never far away, so transboundary animal diseases can quickly invade.

This part of the country, known as the north and far north, is home to 80 percent of Cameroon's livestock, said Gabriel Toumba, regional coordinator for the Livestock Development Project, a World Bank-backed program that coordinated the vaccination campaign in the land.

    .

On average, 88% of small ruminants were vaccinated in each of the three years of the campaign, with vaccines produced by the National Veterinary Laboratory (LANAVET), located just 15 kilometers south of Garoua.

LANAVET produces 25 million doses of vaccines each year to combat various veterinary diseases that affect cattle, small ruminants and poultry.

It performs diagnosis and quality controls through the application of nuclear and related technologies (see The role of nuclear and related techniques in the diagnosis of PPR).

In fact, as a tour of its 1,200-square-meter plant reveals, about half of its equipment has been donated by the IAEA through its technical cooperation program and the VETLAB Network, a global network of national veterinary diagnostic laboratories.

that promotes research and technology and information transfer.

coordinated by the Joint FAO/IAEA Center for Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture based in Vienna, Austria.

The IAEA's longstanding support, in partnership with the FAO, has included much more: the organizations have provided training and expert advice, as well as reagents and consumables to LANAVET to carry out its research and quality control work, Simon said.

Dickmu Jumbo, Director of the Department of Animal Diagnostics of the national laboratory.

This skills development, supplemented by regular advice from the IAEA, has led to the laboratory's successful accreditation as ISO 17025 compliant, the only veterinary laboratory of its kind in Central Africa.

As a result, it has been able to increase its capacity and now supports several countries in the region by exporting seven different veterinary vaccines.

Livestock farmers in Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon, Ghana and Nigeria benefit from LANAVET's support, including regional trainings and fellowships that it now offers, through the IAEA, to veterinary researchers from these countries.

In addition to diagnosing diseases and producing vaccines, LANAVET also performs quality control tests on veterinary drugs imported into Cameroon.

This also uses nuclear and related technologies.

An outbreak that spread rapidly It was the diagnosis by LANAVET experts in 2019 that confirmed the epidemic: 44% of the animals surveyed were infected.

After the campaign that led to the vaccination of around 5 million small ruminants across the country, less than 5 percent of the surveyed sample fell ill and the proportion continues to fall, Jumbo said.

“This is proof that LANAVET fulfilled the main objective of the project with the IAEA: to help alleviate the poverty of small farmers through PPR control by supporting the national vaccination program and informing the country's vaccination strategy” Jumbo said.

While the campaign will end in January 2023, vigilance will be required, Toumba of the Livestock Development Project said.

The migration of wild ruminants and the mixing of herds herded across large tracts of land by pastoral farmers could trigger another outbreak at any time.

To mitigate this risk, the government will remain vigilant and use its vaccination and control strategy to quickly stop the thread of any new outbreak, he added.

Surveillance by farmers like Dairou will likely be necessary until 2030, the target year for global eradication of the disease set by the FAO, which supports countries in Africa in the fight against PPR.

“Only then can we be sure that PRPD does not come back from our neighbors,” Dairou said.

THE SCIENCE The role of nuclear and related techniques in PPR diagnosis Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) are two techniques of nuclear origin used for disease diagnosis.

ELISA is easy to set up and use, making it suitable for any veterinary laboratory.

Scientists place a sample of diluted serum from an animal in a precoated microtiter plate and, if the sample contains antibodies to the suspected disease, it causes a change in the enzyme reaction that changes the colors of the fluid, confirming the presence of the disease.

    illness.

ELISA is often used for initial testing and screening of large populations, but cannot be used to accurately identify virus strains.

PCR is a nuclear-derived method for detecting the presence of specific genetic material from any pathogen, including a virus, in samples.

Originally, the method used radioactive isotope labels to visualize target genetic materials, but further refinement led to the replacement of isotopic labeling with specific labels, most often fluorescent dyes.

Professionalism, strong leadership crucial to attaining ISO certification – NSE

Professionalism, strong leadership crucial to attaining ISO certification – NSE From Left to Right : Mr Olugbolahan Sobande, Managing Director, CrThe Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) on Tuesday said that strong, ethical and honest leadership was crucial to attaining integrated management system ISO certification.

The body said this at the 4th Babagana Mohammed Public Lecture and induction of new corporate members of the Victoria Island Branch of NSE in Lagos.

The lecture has the theme: “Leadership Aspects of Integrated Management System (IMS) ISO Certification.

” The News Agency of Nigeria reports that an integrated management system is a single system designed to manage multiple aspects of an organisation’s operations in line with multiple ISO standard for quality, environmental and health and safety management.

Delivering the lecture, Mr Olugbolahan Sobande, Managing Director, Crestech Engineering Ltd., said that organisations that desire to attain ISO certification must have the utmost regard for professionalism and good leadership.

Olugbolahan said that leadership involved setting realistic vision, mission and values; organisational objectives; effective risk management strategies; stakeholders’ needs and expectations.

He listed other crucial duties as assessing internal and external issues as well as determining strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

Olugbolahan said that honesty, integrity, respect for people and safety must be reflected in the values of the organisation’s leadership.

“When planning for the IMS, an organisation is required to determine the risks to its processes, products, and services.

They should plan actions to address these risks and evaluate the effectiveness of the actions.

“Leaders must ensure that the organisation deliver on its mission and objectives in spite of challenges.

“Organisational goals must be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound,” he said.

According to him, the process of setting goals includes employee involvement, resource assessment, a proper definition of key performance indicators and timeliness.

In his address, the NSE National President, Mr Tasiu Gidari-Wudil said that the theme of the lecture was apt for engineers, considering their important role as leaders in the digital transformation of the nation.

Gidari-Wudil was represented by the Deputy President, Mr Margaret Oguntala.

“Digital economy is the worldwide network for economic activities and professional interactions that are enabled by information and communication technologies.

“It highlights the opportunities and the need for organisations and individuals to use technologies to execute tasks better, faster and differently.

“Based on the role of engineers as leaders in the technology world, it is, therefore, necessary that we possess strong leadership qualities that will advance the frontiers of technological development in the nation,” he said.

He charged the inductees to work hard, develop themselves and participate in all activities of the NSE at the branch and national levels.

Also speaking, the NSE Victoria Island Chairman, Mr Emeka Ibeh, said that the annual lecture was part of the branch’s efforts to highlight the challenges in the engineering community and inputs of the NSE in resolving them as well improving the practice.

He added that it was also to celebrate and honour Mohammed’s exemplary achievements.

According to him, Mohammed  is a founding member of the Victoria Island branch and immediate past national president of the NSE.

Ibeh urged the inductees to remain resolute in their professional duties and engage in continuous professional development and learning to advance the engineering society.

In his remarks, Mohammed emphasised the need for everyone to work together to have ethical and honest leadership in all sectors for national development.

“People who aspire to be leaders must come with clean hands.

We don’t have ethical and honest leaders, that is why we’re in the deplorable state we are today.

“Youths and inductees today must work hard to change lives, prove that you’re trustworthy and capable of leading people rightly towards a greater future.

He expressed gratitude to God for being alive to witness the fourth lecture done in honour of his achievements.

NAN reports that 56 members were inducted as corporate members to the NSE, Victoria Island branch.

The lecture and induction were part of the  branch’s 2022 Engineering Week with the theme: ”Advancing the Frontiers of Communication and Digital Economy in Nigeria: The role of the Nigeria Engineer.

100 MSMEs secure export certifications — NEPC

NAN) The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) has said that over 100 Medium, Small and Micro Enterprises (MSME) have received export certifications to qualify them for exportation of their products.

The Executive Director of NEPC, Dr Ezra Yakusak, revealed this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Jos on Sunday.

Yakusak, who visited the Plateau regional office of the council, commended the team for effectively managing and executing the mandates of the organisation.

He also praised the office for its efforts in empowering and sensitising the public to the opportunities in export.

On some developments in the sector, the ED noted that the organisation had addressed some of the limitations to the export business with the Introduction of the “Go Global Go certification” programme.

He added that more than 100 MSME’s have had their certifications facilitated and totally paid for by the Export promotion Council.

“I need to also say that at the Nigeria Export Promotion Council, we have done several interventions to ensure that we promote export of non-oil goods from Nigeria.

“One of the key things we’ve embarked on, is a programme called “Go Global Go Certification”.

“And that programme is where we identify the various MSMEs with potentials and those that have products that need to be exported.

“And we actually pay for the certification of those products because most of the cases of export rejected from Nigeria is due to non certification of those products.

“We identify those MSMEs and we invite various certifying bodies both within and outside Nigeria.

“They come here and check through their processes of production and they certify them and so far, we have certified about 101 various MSMEs now.

Yakusak noted that though 101 might seem like a small number, the cost of each of the certification done was totally borne by the NEPC, some of which costs over one million naira, depending on the type.

“Some of them like ISO costs up to one million, one million plus and if you multiply that by 100 each you know how much you’ve put in.

” And everything in terms of the financial cost was borne 100 per cent by NEPC.

“And of course, that has increased our exports and increased the chances of those MSMEs exporting into the international market.

“It has also given a competitive edge to our products.

These are some of the things we are doing to ensure that Nigerian products are out there.

Introducing Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 and Galaxy Z Fold4: Samsung’s Most Versatile Devices, Changing the Way We Interact with Smartphones

Samsung (www.Samsung.com) has announced the next generation of ground-breaking foldable smartphones: Galaxy Z Flip4 and Galaxy Z Fold4.

Both devices feature customisable form factors, tailored experiences, and upgraded performance.

Now in its fourth generation, Galaxy Z series continues to break from convention to deliver new, impactful interactions that enhance everyday life.

“Samsung Galaxy foldables are built on the foundation of our openness philosophy, enabling new possibilities with complete customisation both inside and out.

Created in collaboration with our world-class partners, the next foldable devices offer unparalleled mobile experiences that meet the needs of our most dynamic users,” said Dr. TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics.

“Through our unwavering focus, excitement for the foldables continues to grow.

We’ve successfully transformed this category from a radical project to a mainstream device line-up and enjoyed by people worldwide.”As a testament to Samsung’s dedication to superior craftsmanship, every component in both form factors has been thoroughly analysed to deliver a truly optimised experience to ensure that every consumer has a device to fit their needs.

The Galaxy Z Flip4 builds on the success of Samsung’s iconic form factor, adding key features, including an upgraded camera experience, a larger battery [1] and expanded customisation, while maintaining its ultra-compact design.

The Galaxy Z Fold4 opens up new possibilities for users by delivering Samsung’s most comprehensive smartphone experience to-date, offering shape-shifting design, immersive displays and PC-like multitasking features, in addition to advanced camera technology and powerful mobile processors.

Galaxy Z Flip4, the Ultimate Self-expression Tool Inside and OutThe Galaxy Z Flip4 enhances our users’ favourite features, making it the ultimate tool for self-expression.

Its compact clamshell design offers unique experiences, so you can shoot hands-free video or capture full group selfies at various angles by partially folding Z Flip4 to activate FlexCam [2].

These can even be enjoyed on users’ favourite apps [3].

Thanks to Samsung’s partnership with Meta, FlexCam is optimised for popular social platforms, including Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook.

Do more than ever with Z Flip4 by taking high-quality selfies right from the Cover Screen by leveraging the main camera with the upgraded Quick Shot. Start high-quality video recording in Quick Shot mode and then seamlessly switch to Flex mode to continue recording hands-free without stopping the video – ideal for content creators and vloggers.

The users are now able to take selfies in Portrait Mode and see preview in actual photo ratio when using Quick Shot. With an upgraded camera equipped with a 65 percent brighter sensor[4] powered by the Snapdragon® 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform, photos and videos are crisper and more stable – day or night.

Z Flip4 is crafted to go truly hands-free – doing more without ever opening the phone.

Make calls, reply to texts, unlock the car [5] and even control the SmartThings Scene widget [6], all from the Cover Screen.

Galaxy Z Flip4 can capture, watch and connect longer between charges with the expanded 3,700mAh battery [7].

With Super-Fast Charging, now supported on Z Flip4, charge up to 50 percent in around 30 minutes [8], keeping users connected when they’re running low.

With the slimmer hinge, straightened edges, contrasting hazed back glass and glossy metal frames, the design is our most refined yet.

The users can fully customise the Z Flip4 inside and out, with Galaxy Themes on both Cover and Main Screen to complement their style with custom fonts, icons and designs.

Plus, users can create their own Cover Screen with new clock designs and backgrounds in various formats such as images, GIFs and even video[9].

Galaxy Z Fold4, a Multi-Tasking Powerhouse with Ultimate PerformanceThe Galaxy Z Fold4 is the result of Samsung Galaxy’s enduring smartphone innovation and our most powerful smartphone yet.

Z Fold4 combines Samsung’s collective mobile technology expertise to create a device with increased functionality whether opened, closed, or in Flex mode[10].

Furthermore, it is Samsung’s first device to ship with Android 12L, a special version of Android created by Google for large-screen experiences, including foldables.

Multitasking on Z Fold4 is easier than ever, so users can get more done on the move.

The new Taskbar [11] provides a layout similar to your PC, offering access to your favourite and recent apps.

Multitasking is also more intuitive, thanks to new swipe gestures [12].

Instantly switch full-screen apps to pop-up windows or split your screen in half for more ways to multitask [13].

Samsung’s partnerships with Google and Microsoft take multitasking to the next level.

Google apps, including Chrome and Gmail now support drag-and-drop, allowing users to quickly copy and paste links, photos and more from one app to another.

With Google Meet, users can now connect with more people while enjoying virtual co-activities, including co-watching videos on YouTube or playing games together on a video call [14].

Microsoft’s full Office suite and Outlook take advantage of the foldable display, providing more information on the screen and faster ways to interact with the content.

The multitasking experience is complete with S Pen [15] functionality, enabling on-the-go drawing and notetaking with streamlined storage inside the Standing Cover with Pen case [16].

Galaxy Z Fold4 takes stunning photos and videos with an upgraded 50MP wide lens and 30x Space Zoom [17] lens.

A variety of camera modes, including the larger Zoom map activated on Capture View Mode, Dual Preview, and Rear Cam Selfie are custom-built to take advantage of the unique form factor for increased capturing flexibility.

And with the larger pixel size, a 23 percent brighter sensor [18], and enhanced processing power, users can capture clear images even at night.

Content is even more immersive and distinctive on the 7.6-inch Main Screen [19], with a brighter screen, a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate [20], and a less visible Under Display Camera (UDC) featuring a new scatter-type sub-pixel arrangement.

Popular social media apps like Facebook are optimised for the large-screen experience to make content more enjoyable.

Or open your favourite streaming entertainment service apps like Netflix [21] and watch hands-free with Flex mode.

For non-optimised apps, users can even control the device without disrupting the content with the new Flex Mode Touchpad [22], offering accuracy while pausing, rewinding, and playing videos, or zooming in and out of content while the device is in Flex mode.

Games are snappier too thanks to the powerful Snapdragon® 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform and hyper-fast 5G [23].

With a slimmer hinge, lighter weight, and even narrower bezels, the wider screen enables easier one-handed interactions while using the Cover Screen [24].

Samsung continues its barrier-defying innovation journey to deliver the level of durability consumers expect, both in and out.

With our Armour Aluminium frames and hinge cover along with exclusive Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus®+ on the Cover Screen and rear glass, Z Flip4 and Z Fold4 are our toughest foldables ever.

Durability of the Main Screen panel is also enhanced thanks to the optimised layer structure, helping to reduce damage from external shock.

In addition, both Z Flip4 and Z Fold4 are equipped with IPX8 [25] water resistance, so users can worry less if they get caught in the rain.

Galaxy Buds2 Pro, Premium Design with the Ultimate Listening ExperienceJoining the Galaxy Z series are Galaxy Buds2 Pro - Samsung’s new top-of-the-line earbuds that provide Samsung’s most immersive wireless audio experience with a new, compact design, and seamless connectivity that is perfect for any aspect of your everyday life.

Appreciate every musical interlude with superior Hi-Fi 24bit Audio [26], which offers high-dynamic range helping you feel connected to the content you’re listening to with crystal-clear resolution.

With the new Samsung seamless codec [27] (SSC HiFi), quality music is enabled to transfer without a pause, and the new coaxial 2-way speaker makes those sounds richer than ever.

The new compact, ergonomic design is 15 percent smaller [28], with a secure fit that is engineered to prevent rotation, making it the perfect fitness companion.

Take calls on-the-go with powerful ANC [29] to eliminate outside noise.

The new Buds2 Pro allows users to escape into their own world and simultaneously stay connected to their life.

When you need to answer an urgent call while enjoying a gaming session or a movie on your tablet, the Buds2 Pro can seamlessly switch the audio connection to your phone with a touch of a finger.

The Buds2 Pro now features Auto Switch [30] to provide effortless transition from your favourite TV Show to take a call from your loved ones.

And if you happen to misplace your Buds2 Pro on your commute SmartThings Find now makes locating them fast and easy whether they’re inside their cradle or not.

Galaxy for the PlanetSince the launch of the Galaxy S22 series, Samsung has incorporated recycled materials not just in our packaging, but also in the hardware of our new products.

These are the first steps in our Galaxy for the Planet initiative, which includes our continued incorporation of recycled plastics and the creation of new materials in partnership with sustainability partners.

As we continue to pursue innovations in sustainable manufacturing, we are proud to announce that more than 90% of the new Galaxy Buds2 Pro is made with recycled materials [31].

The new Galaxy Z series also incorporates ocean-bound plastics into key components and 100 percent recycled paper for its packaging.

We also reduced volume of the packaging up to 58% [32] compared to the first-generation Galaxy foldables.

This equates to an avoidance of approximately 10,000 tons of carbon emissions from transportation this year [33].

AvailabilityGalaxy Z Flip4 complements users’ styles with premium designs in legacy colours: Bora Purple and Graphite and new colours: Pink Gold and Blue [34].

The Galaxy Z Fold4 and Standing Cover with Pen [35] case are offered in refined colours that include Grey Green, Beige and Phantom Black.

    The Galaxy Z Flip4 will be made available at a recommended retail price of R21 999 and Galaxy Z Fold4 for R37 999 [36].

Both devices will also be accessible on 24 or 36 months’ contracts from network operators.

Customers who pre-order either Galaxy Z Flip4 or Galaxy Z Fold4 from 11 August to 31 August will get the newly launched Galaxy Watch5 for only R29 pm.

With the Samsung trade-in program customers who trade-in their old devices can receive R10 000 cashback or R400 off their contracts and 1-year free Samsung Care Plus screen protection valued at R1 999.

Workshop of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) strengthens the food safety net in Africa

Supporting initiatives to improve food safety across the continent was the focus of an African workshop on food safety jointly organized by the IAEA, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the National Metrology Institute of South Africa (NMISA).

More than 280 experts and researchers from food safety regulators, food testing laboratories, food manufacturers, and governmental and non-governmental organizations from 43 countries shared experiences on vital topics such as food fraud prevention, radionuclide control, use of radio receptor assays and stable isotope techniques for residues of veterinary drugs and pesticides, as well as mycotoxins, toxic metals and biotoxins.

Participants also addressed responding to foodborne illness and disease outbreaks, setting maximum residue limits, and implementing effective food monitoring and surveillance programs.

“This workshop showed the commitment of the African continent to not only increase food and trade safety nationally and in the region, but also to support the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals, including good health and well-being, industry, innovation and infrastructure, as well as ending poverty and hunger,” said Shaukat Abdulrazak, Director of the IAEA's Division of Technical Cooperation for Africa.

“African Union leadership and various stakeholders across the continent discussed cross-cutting food security issues and had a common voice on strategies to support the African Continental Free Trade Area, address food trade rejections and ensure consumer protection and food safety.

During the five-day event held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from June 27 to July 1, 2022, participants discussed the benefits of ISO accreditation for food safety and international trade; ways to collect scientifically reliable data on levels of food hazards, such as mycotoxins, drug and pesticide residues, persistent pollutants, toxic metals and microplastics; and how to develop laboratory tests and reference material adapted to the region, which could allow countries to provide better analytical services.

"We need to develop institutional excellence, which would lead to more ISO accreditation for laboratory services," said Ndwakhulu Mukhufhi, executive director of NMISA.

“This can be achieved by sharing relevant reference material and conducting training programs.

Institutions like NMISA are here to support”.

Participants agreed that there was a need throughout the region to raise awareness of food safety among the general public.

They also agreed that capacities and mechanisms to set food safety standards, including maximum residue limits, should be strengthened, and that it was important to adopt a One Health approach to food safety in Africa.

“Establishing and promoting networks is a top priority,” said Liang Qu, Director of the Joint FAO/IAEA Center for Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture.

“Networks and events of this type offer Member States a platform to share knowledge and experiences on food safety.

Leveraging the strengths of nuclear science, the Joint Center will continue to serve as a mechanism to transfer relevant technology, addressing current and emerging food safety and trade issues.” The workshop coincided with the launch of the Food Security Strategy for Africa (2022-2036) by the African Union Development Agency, which aims to improve public health, food and nutrition security, sustainable livelihoods and economic growth.

The African Union had already established a roadmap to strengthen the capacities of its member countries in the area of food security in its Sanitary and Phytosanitary Policy Framework for Africa launched in 2019.

“The incorporation of the policy framework and strategy in regional economic communities and member states' long-term strategies and frameworks is critical for sustainable financing and implementation,” added Godfrey Bahiigwa, Director of the African Union Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Shelter gap: Firm adopts environment-friendly estates nationwide

A real estate firm in Lagos, REfin Homes, on Wednesday said it was stepping up its climate change advocacy with creation of green locations within its estates across Nigeria.

REfin Homes, during a tree planting exercise and ground breaking of a 10-floor apartment project, called the Begonia, in Ikoyi, Lagos said the firm offered Nigerians housing finance to bridge shelter gap.

A Managing Partner, Mr Kazeem Owolabi, said greening of estates was to bring fusion between nature and urban development, to enable people live healthy in their environment while mitigating climate change.

According to him, tree planting is an environmental-friendly initiative to advocate the importance of green environment in enhancing climate change and urban development.

Owolabi said trees were planted to combine smart and greening environment into their building development, adding that the method was proactive and futuristic.

He said the company, which was green certified, had another ongoing project at Omole and upon completion would be the first green estate in Lagos.

Addressing newsmen during the tree planting and ground breaking, he said Begonia has 18 months completion period and was one of the firm’s green building projects spurred by luxury demands in Ikoyi.

“All our building projects are in line with climate change to ensure that people live well and healthy in their environment,” he said.

Owolabi said the firm also gave intending home owners access to finance while building to clients’ specifications and capacity, so that issues of “overprice, underprice or building challenges would not surface” .

He said the company’s policies were geared towards addressing shelter gap while building according to people’s specifications.

He said the opportunities were available for all classes and income levels and expressed hope for increased partnership with governments towards addressing housing deficit.

“We are the first indigenous ISO certified real estate company in Nigeria.

“The whole idea is for us to match international standards from onset, in order to attract people from diaspora so that when they come in, there won’t be much of a difference in what is obtainable here and abroad,” he added.

Earlier, another Managing Partner, Mr Olatunde Macaulay, explained that the current estate was named after a plant called Begonia.

He said this was to show a significance between nature and urban development.

Macaulay noted that asides naming the estate after a plant, all estates built by the firm were well adorned with trees to promote greening environment.

He explained that the colours of the plants,  yellow and black, symbolised the happiness clients would feel on getting home, as well as the boldness and uniqueness.
