UNIJOS lecturers don down tools, strike indefinite over March salary wey no show

Wahala don start again for University of Jos as lecturers under ASUU branch for di school don declare indefinite strike. Di action wey begin Wednesday, April 8, 2026 na because dem no pay March salary and dem remove Earned Academic Allowance from di money wey suppose reach dem hand.

Di union branch chairperson, Jurbe Joseph Molwus, sign notice give members on Tuesday say make everybody comot from lectures, exams, and all meetings with immediate effect. Di directive follow due process and align with National Executive Council and congress resolutions wey ASUU get.

“After following due process, we hereby request all members to abstain from lectures, conduct of exams and statutory meetings as our salary for the month of March 2026 is yet to be paid despite our patience,” di statement read. Molwus yarn say di strike go dey until dem pay di money wey dey outstanding.

Wetin cause di delay? According to di union, di Office of the Accountant General of Federation na di main problem. Di university bursary department don finish dia own part for di salary processing, but di money still dey hang for Abuja.

“From our consultation, the delay is occasioned by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation as the bursary of the University has done its part in the process of salary payment,” di statement add. Di lecturers vex say dem dey take dia patience for granted and some people dey try frustrate industrial harmony for di institution.

“It seems our patience is being taken for granted by those who are determined to frustrate industrial harmony,” di union talk. Dem don even activate strike monitoring team to make sure all members comply fully. No lecturer go enter classroom or mark exam until dis mata settle.

Dis UNIJOS strike na just part of bigger wahala wey dey Nigeria tertiary education sector now. Lecturers across di country dey complain about salary delays under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration. For March alone, plenty universities don face similar issues.

SaharaReporters don earlier report say lecturers from Ahmadu Bello University, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, and Federal University Birnin Kebbi dey lament say dem no pay March salaries. Di timing bad pass because Easter period just dey go and people get family to feed.

Abdelghaffar Amoka from Ahmadu Bello University don talk say di delay show lack of consideration. “This has become a pattern, but this particular delay shows a lack of consideration. People have families to cater for, especially during festive periods like this,” one lecturer tell SaharaReporters.

Di UNIJOS strike come exactly one month after ASUU members across many branches for country express frustration over Federal Government failure to fully implement renegotiated agreement wey dem reach with di union. Dat agreement suppose take effect from January 1, 2026.

Lecturers from University of Abuja, University of Calabar, Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun, Federal University of Otuoke, Federal University of Lafia, Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko, Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences Kwale, Federal University of Technology Minna, and Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education all don talk say key provisions of di agreement still dey pending.

Improved welfare packages, funding commitments, and outstanding allowances na some of di things wey government promise but no fulfill months after agreed commencement date. Di lecturers argue say di delay dey erode trust between government and university workers.

Dem warn say if government no take urgent steps to honor di agreement terms, renewed industrial unrest fit spread across campuses. Consistent implementation of such agreements critical not only to maintain industrial harmony but also to safeguard quality of teaching, research, and academic productivity for Nigerian universities.

For UNIJOS now, students wey suppose dey prepare for exams don see dia plans scatter. Di strike indefinite mean nobody know when academic activities go resume. Di union chairperson Molwus emphasize say di action take immediate effect and go continue until dem pay di salaries.

“This is in line with extant NEC resolution and our standing congress resolution. The action takes immediate effect from Wednesday, April 8, 2026, until we are paid,” Molwus talk. Di delay from Accountant General office don turn to full-blown industrial action wey affect thousands of students.

Di union concern na say di continued delay suggest lack of regard for lecturers welfare and fit undermine industrial harmony within di institution. Dem talk say dem don show considerable patience but di patience don finish.

As strike monitoring team begin work for UNIJOS campus, di big question remain: when government go pay di March salaries and address di Earned Academic Allowance issue? For now, classrooms go dey empty, exams go postpone, and academic calendar go suffer another disruption.
