Di forum wey dem call South-East Former Governors Forum na to advise serving governors on how to move di region forward. According to Minister of Works David Umahi, wey be former governor of Ebonyi State, di body go work hand-in-hand with current leaders.
“You fit dey wonder wetin dey happen,” Umahi yarn. “Wetin happen na di birth of forum of former South-East governors today, April 7, 2026. Some former governors dey outside country for medical check-ups and other engagements, but for our next meeting, we sure say over 90 per cent of former governors from South-East go show face.”
Di meeting see attendance of former Governor of Enugu State Sullivan Chime, former Governor of Ebonyi State Martin Elechi, former Governor of Abia State Okezie Ikpeazu, and former Governor of Anambra State Chris Ngige. Ambassador-designate to Greece Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and Ambassador-designate to Spain Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu also show face.
But some big names no come. Former governors Peter Obi, Ikedi Ohakim, and Chimaroke Nnamani no dey present. Umahi explain say dem dey abroad for medical trips, but dem expect dem for next meeting.
Di forum open to all former governors from South-East, no matter which political party dem belong. “Di forum na for all former governors, irrespective of party affiliation, so far dem don be governor for South-East,” Umahi talk.
Dem commend current South-East governors for di work dem dey do. “We commend di work wey governors of South-East dey do for benefit of our people,” Umahi add.
Di former governors also praise President Bola Tinubu for infrastructure development across country, especially for South-East. Dem talk say dem appreciate appointments wey President give to sons and daughters of di region.
“We commend Mr President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for key appointments given to sons and daughters of South-East and for infrastructural development wey dey happen for di region, as well as for other parts of country,” Umahi state.
In strong political move, di forum declare support for Tinubu re-election. “We boldly say say all governors of South-East dey support Mr. President re-election,” Umahi talk, adding say di forum go align with dis position.
Di former governors plan to pay courtesy visit to Governor of Enugu State Peter Mbah. Dem also go engage leadership of South-East Governors' Forum to present dia objectives and explore areas of collaboration.
Umahi emphasize say di group overall goal na to ‘synergise’ with current leaders and help communicate government achievements to people, while also offering guidance based on dia experience for office.
Di next meeting go hold within two weeks, and dem expect more former governors to join. Among those wey dem mention as absent for inaugural meeting na Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Senator Theodore Orji of Abia State; Chief Ikedi Ohakim, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and Chief Achike Udenwa of Imo State.
Di forum acknowledge federal support to state governments nationwide, wey dem say contribute to achievements wey governors record. Dem describe efforts of current governors as impactful on lives of people, particularly for infrastructure development, empowerment programmes, and security interventions.
