ECOWAS Bank Drop Big Money For West Africa Development Projects

Na big news dey for West Africa as di ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) just approve serious money wey go touch different countries for di region. Di bank say dem don give green light to USD 266.7 million and XOF 30 billion to fund strategic projects wey go help development for Nigeria, The Gambia, Ghana, Senegal, and CƓte d'Ivoire.

Dis decision come from di 95th Session of di Board of Directors wey hold on 30 March 2026. Di President and Chairman of di Board of Directors of EBID, Dr. George Agyekum Donkor, talk say dis money go help member states build projects wey fit create value and align with di Sustainable Development Goals. “We dey invest for infrastructure, agro-industry, environmental management, and industrial transformation,” Dr. Donkor yarn. “Na to make West Africa more resilient, inclusive, and integrated we dey aim for.”

For Nigeria, di money go touch two major areas. First, USD 50 million go go for construction of waste management facilities for Lagos under public-private partnership. Di project go increase recycling rate to 45%, create over 5,000 jobs, and produce 60,000 tons of organic compost every year. Second, USD 91.63 million go fund transport infrastructure development for Bauchi State to modernize roads and reduce logistics costs. Plus, USD 100 million go support di Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway wey go connect nine coastal states and boost regional trade.

Ghana go benefit from USD 15 million to build tissue paper manufacturing plant wey go produce 65 tons per day. Na to reduce import dependence and support industrialization. For The Gambia, USD 10.04 million go expand G Farms Ltd. operations to increase poultry and dairy production and strengthen food security.

Senegal go collect XOF 20 billion credit line to BNDE to finance small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and support agricultural value chains. CĆ“te d’Ivoire go get XOF 10 billion credit line to Afriland First Bank to fund MSMEs and SMEs and promote job creation.

Dis move by EBID show say di bank serious about supporting long-term economic development for West Africa. Di projects cover different sectors—from waste management to agriculture to transport—and dem dey aim to make di region more competitive and resilient. As West Africa dey face challenges like food security and infrastructure gaps, dis kind investment fit help bridge di gap.

Akufo-Addo go arrive Cotonou on April 8 and return to Accra on April 15 with delegation wey include diplomats, electoral experts, and representatives from national electoral commissions.

Di development come as West Africa dey grapple with broader economic issues. For instance, di World Bank don warn say sub-Saharan African economies fit lose between $37 billion and $79 billion in output for 2020 due to Covid-19, with agricultural production expected to contract. But di EBID investments dey show say regional bodies dey step up to support recovery and growth.

President John Mahama of Ghana talk say both countries get opportunity to strengthen linkages between West and Southern Africa through ECOWAS and SADC. Mahama identify mining, agriculture, and energy as key areas for cooperation.

As West Africa dey move forward, di role of institutions like EBID go remain crucial.
