Na so e go, my people! Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani don yarn say make dem give women better chance for politics wey plenty of dem dey missing for the wahala of naija governance. Dis one happen as e flag off the campaign for Reserved Seats for Women Bill wey dey happen as dem dey try amend constitution.
As per wetin Sani talk, women suppose dey hold plenty seats for National Assembly wey dem dey represent almost half of Nigeria population. He gree say na wah, because women dey only occupy less than five per cent of di legislative seats for national level – wetin no sweet any ear for democracy.
Dem say for North-West, women dey face plenty wahala for politics as dem dey struggle with socio-cultural issues, economic wahala, and dem no fit access political networks well. But Sani don find am say dis kin gist no be because of capacity, na because of structural and cultural barriers wey don dey hold dem back for years.
But no be say things no fit change oh! E don show say if proper policies dey put in place, wetin go fit allow women make dem shine for politics, e go happen. For Kaduna, e don already set example. Dem don get female Deputy Governor, female Majority Leader for di House of Assembly, and dem even get female head for key ministries. Na history matter wey dey happen for dis North-West region!
Sani talk say dis kain achievement no be by mistake, na hard work and deliberate actions wey create space for women to contest election and show wetin dem fit do. He also remind us say naija don make promises since 1995, say make dem dey give women space, yet na only 5 per cent dem dey control for di Assembly as of 2023.
The Reserved Seats for Women Bill go add 182 seats for women across National and State Assemblies, one for each state and di FCT for Senate, House of Representatives, and Houses of Assembly. Dem talk say dis go no take any of di existing seats but go just increase am, to give women a fair fighting chance.
Dr. Mary Alile Idele wey be APC National Women Leader join line talk say di trend wey dey decrease for women representation no be good at all. She call am wake-up call say women no suppose dey side-line like dis. E be like say dis bill go turn di tide, inspire young girls, and make Nigeria democracy stronger.
