My people, make I gist you wetin dey happen for Nigeria politics! E be like say we fit finally see some light for women matter as lawmakers don dey gather demself for National Assembly to consider this Reserved Seats for Women Bill. E be like say dem don reach advanced stage for dis matter, and plenty stakeholders don dey push am forward!
For Abuja on Thursday, waza wey happen na Capacity Building for Women’s Rights Organisations wey na advocacy forum wey the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development organize. Dem dey push this bill wey go give women plenty seats for Senate and House of Representatives. Imagine, dem dey propose 37 extra seats for Senate, 37 for House of Representatives and three reserved seats for all 36 states. Na serious move to tackle the wahala wey dey ground!
As e stand now, women dey hold just 3.7% for Senate and 3.9% for House of Representatives. This one no fit abeg! Naija dey rank among the lowest globally when e come to women political representation, and dis bill na way to change am. Even Dr. Otive Igbuzor, wey be popular human rights advocate, don talk say this move fit align us with global best practices.
Igbuzor don yarn say as e be now, Nigeria dey one of the worst when e come to women’s representation. If dem fit pass this bill, e go make the 10th National Assembly shine like gold! But no be only political matter we dey face; Nigeria still dey battle entrenched inequalities wey dey fuel gender-based violence. Na serious wahala wey we need tackle from all sides!
Dem also talk say men need to join body to dismantle patriarchy wey dey spoil matter, and e no go happen if dem no change wetin dem dey believe. Igbuzor talk say men need to use their influence to support women and make sure say gender-based violence no go continue. Na wetin be the change wey we need, and we dey hope say the men go rise to the occasion!
Stakeholders for this forum dey optimistic say the 10th National Assembly go make this bill priority as dem dey try deepen inclusivity and strengthen democracy. This one go align Nigeria with wetin other countries dey do for gender equality. As e be like this, we dey hope say plenty positive changes go follow if dis Reserved Seats for Women Bill finally pass.
