My people, make I tell una wetin dey happen for our obodo Nigeria! E be like say House of Representatives don waka enter one serious matter wey fit change how police dey treat suspects for country.
Dem dey consider bill wey go stop all these public parade wey police dey do anytime dem catch person. You know as e be, once dem catch you, na so your face go dey for front of camera like celebrity, even before court don hear your matter. Dis one na wetin human rights groups and everyday Nigerians don dey shout for years!
The proposal dey come from the recommendations wey Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, and im committee don gather. E go soon enter debate when National Assembly resume from holiday wey dem just come back from. Dis bill go join Section 34 for our 1999 Constitution wey dey protect everybody dignity.
As e be now, the law dey talk say everybody suppose get respect for im dignity. No be just to catch person, condemn am, take picture, and make am do crime for public like film act! So, dem wan insert new part wey go clearly talk say to parade arrested persons no go jam the law again.
For years, this parade don turn normal something for Naija, wey we dey see suspects dey stand like dem wan jingle bell for journalists, and na so dem dey put crime for dem neck, even before dem enter court. Na wetin go make civil society dey vex, because e dey scatter people life give dem psychological trauma, and dem dey violate dem fundamental rights. Court don even talk say dis matter dey abuse power, but police no wan hear.
Now, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin wey get Women Arise, don praise House of Reps for dis bill wey fit align Nigeria with wetin dey happen for international human rights standards. She don yarn say, “E get ban wey dey already dey for torture and cruel treatment, wey just dey japa from Geneva Conventions and other laws. E no dey correct to dey treat person like say dem no be human being.”
Dis one na good move wey suppose save plenty souls from bad treatment for our law enforcement agencies. If dem fit pass am, e go change the way police dey do their work and also protect suspects from public disgrace.
Nigeria still dey fight to balance our laws and human rights. E no go too much if we start treating person like person, wetin una think? Make we dey watch as dem go discuss this bill. Nigeria go better!
