Senator Oluremi Tinubu don raise alarm say youth involvement in cybercrimes dey pose big threat to Nigeria economic growth. She talk dis one during the National Cybercrimes Summit wey the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) organize in collaboration with the European Union-funded Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA).
According to her, with young people making up more than 60% of Nigeria population, their involvement in cybercrime dey affect the country’s economic development negatively. She emphasize say the increasing involvement of youth in cybercrime not only give Nigeria bad name internationally but also dey pose significant threat to the country’s financial system and increase crimes against individuals, including child pornography.
The Head of the Programme of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), Danladi Plang, also talk say as technology dey progress, reliance on it dey increase, and dis one dey lead to more cybercrime. He suggest say instead of just arresting, trying, convicting, and imprisoning, Nigeria should find other ways to channel the energies and skills of youth in using technology positively.
Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, who also attend the summit, say he no dey scared of EFCC and he ready to support the commission in fighting cybercrime. He emphasize say leaders must be accountable and transparent, and dat dis is the way forward to redeem Nigeria image internationally.
