Syria: War, Drones, and Mental Health Crisis

Syria dey face plenty challenges, from ongoing civil war to mental health crisis wey dey affect many people. After 13 years of war and displacement, northwest Syria dey experience serious mental health issues. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) report say many people dey suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression due to ongoing violence, loss of loved ones, and poor living conditions.

The humanitarian situation for these people no be easy. Over 4 million people dey live in dire conditions, with 3.5 million internally displaced. They struggle to find food, access healthcare, and get proper shelter. The recent earthquakes in February 2023 and August 2024 have made things worse, leading to a rise in suicide rates. Since the beginning of 2024, there have been 37 recorded deaths by suicide, including 21 failed attempts, which is a 14 percent increase compared to last year.

In addition to the humanitarian crisis, Syria also dey face security threats. On Monday, Israel Air Force intercept two drones wey come from Syria, preventing them from entering Israeli territory. This incident show the ongoing tension and conflict in the region.

The funding for humanitarian response in northwest Syria dey critically low. Only 26 percent of the Syria response plan has been funded, leaving a huge deficit of $3 billion. The health sector, especially mental health care, dey suffer greatly from this funding gap, which can lead to more violence and social instability.

MSF dey work hard to provide mental health services, combining psychological support with medical services. They run mobile clinics in displacement camps and non-communicable diseases clinics at primary health care centers. However, stigma against mental health issues still be a big barrier for people to seek help.
