President Bola Tinubu don give Vice President Kashim Shettima the mandate to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa. This meeting go hold from October 21 to 26, and it be the first time CHOGM dey happen for the Pacific island of Apia, Samoa.
VP Shettima go join King Charles of England and other world leaders from 56 member countries to discuss the theme, “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth.” The theme go focus on how member countries fit use their strength through resilience, unlock their potential, leverage the ‘Commonwealth Advantage’, and foster a connected, digital Commonwealth.
Nigeria and other member countries also go elect and appoint the next Commonwealth Secretary-General. According to the agreed memorandum on the Establishment and Functions of the Commonwealth Secretariat (revised 2022) and the principle of regional rotation, the next Commonwealth Secretary-General go come from the Africa Region. The candidates for the role be from Lesotho, Ghana, and The Gambia, while Nigeria go play a major role as the largest African member.
Shettima and other world leaders go deliberate on global economic, environmental, and security challenges. They go discuss how Commonwealth countries fit work together to build resilience, boost trade, innovation, and growth, and empower the Commonwealth’s 1.5 billion young people for a more peaceful and sustainable future.
The Vice President also go use the Commonwealth Business Forum to attract investors to Nigeria. He go participate in the People’s Forum, engage with global leaders on development issues, and attend bilateral meetings and other executive sessions.
This trip go be Shettima’s 11th foreign destination and 12th trip abroad since he become Vice President. He don spend 56 days abroad, visiting 10 countries on 12 unique and recurrent trips, and he don accumulate over 93 flight hours.
