Relocate Now, Ogun Tell Residents of Flooded Areas

Residents of flooded areas in Ogun and Lagos states are facing severe challenges as the release of water from the Oyan dam continues to worsen the flood situation. The Ogun State Government has urged residents in flood-prone areas to evacuate immediately to avoid further danger.

The flood crisis, particularly in the Isheri Estates communities along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, has become alarming. Residents are struggling to navigate the increasing floodwater, and the demand for boat services has skyrocketed. Boat paddlers are overwhelmed, leading to long waits and frustration among the residents.

Residents have resorted to using boats to commute, but the high demand has led to increased fares. Some private boat operators, especially those from the Ijaw ethnic group, have capitalized on the situation by charging as high as N1000 for a single trip, especially at night. The community leaders have expressed their concerns about the single boat serving the Riverview Estate, which is insufficient to meet the needs of the residents.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, has advised residents to evacuate without delay, emphasizing the need for temporary shelters for those affected by the flooding. The government is planning to accommodate flood victims and persons prone to flooding.

The flood has also affected communities in the Agiliti area of Mile 12 in Lagos State, with residents using boats to navigate their way in and out of the communities. The floodwaters have extended into streets and homes, displacing some residents.
