Operators for the shipping industry dey complain say poor regulations dey affect their work seriously. According to dem, the lack of clear and effective regulations dey cause many problems, from security issues to environmental concerns.
One of the main issues be the implementation of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. While the code aim to improve security on ships and in ports, the process of creating and approving the Ship Security Plan (SSP) can be very slow and cumbersome. The SSP, which is a comprehensive document that outlines security measures for a ship, can take anywhere from 15 days to 2 months to get approved by the flag state.
Another challenge be the mental health of seafarers. Shipping companies need to prioritize mental health by providing resources, training, and services to help seafarers manage their mental health effectively. However, many companies no dey take dis issue serious enough, and it dey affect the overall well-being and performance of the crew.
Environmental regulations also dey pose a problem. Countries need to extend their climate policies to the maritime sector by encouraging the use of cleaner fuels in shipping. But the transition to cleaner fuels dey slow due to lack of clear guidelines and incentives.
In addition, deceptive shipping practices, especially those used by groups like Hizballah to evade sanctions, dey complicate the regulatory landscape. These practices include falsifying cargo and vessel documents, ship-to-ship transfers, and disabling shipboard automatic identification systems. Dis dey make it hard for authorities to track and regulate shipping activities properly.
