Videos wey dey circulate on social media show protesters running away as police fire shots. Di protesters converge around 8:30 am at di toll gate with banners and placards, calling for di full implementation of di reports submitted by various judicial panels of inquiry set up after di 2020 protests.
In October 2020, thousands of Nigerian youths take to di streets to protest against di constant harassment, killings, and extortion by officers of di defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit of di Nigerian police. Di protest culminate at Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, where several youths were reportedly killed and many others severely injured following di intervention of di Nigerian military.
According to one of di protesters, identified as Excel, “Dem start fire teargas at us. I fall into gutter; I get hit on di head,” he tell PUNCH Online. Another protester, Bayo Are, say, “I get hit too. I no really injured, just few scratches on my body. Some people also get arrested.”
Benjamin Hundeyin, di Public Relations Officer of di Lagos State Police Command, say there be no confrontation, but di police had to disperse di protesters to prevent traffic disruption at di Lekki Toll Gate. “Dem tell dem to disperse, but dem be adamant; we had to use minimal force to disperse dem,” Hundeyin say.
