Abuja, Nigeria – E don happen again o! The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) don burst the bubble of eight electricity distribution companies (DisCos) wey no fit provide at least 20 hours of light to their customers. Na dem DisCos dem, wey sabi show face but no dey deliver! E be like say na wetin we dey call ‘band A feeders’ dey suffer as NERC don order dem to downgrade 18 of these feeders to lower bands. Wetin dey sup?
As per the latest gist, the order wey come from NERC be part of May 2025 Supplementary Order to the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO). You fit say na the regulation wey dey guide how these DisCos go carry manage our electricity supply, because na wa o! The customers go chop compensation for 213 feeders, wey no dey provide the steady electricity dem dey expect.
The affected companies no be small players. Na their big names include Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKDC), Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC), Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IE), Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KAEDCO), and Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC). E be like say light no wan shine for dem!
Make we break am down small, EKDC carry 84 feeders go market, as na dem get the highest feeders wey dey get compensation. But you sabi say wetin cause am na load shedding wey the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) dey perform. That one mean say the main reason na because dem no fit meet up with the 20 hours light supply; no be joke!
Ikeja DisCo follow with 50 feeders wey dey wait for compensation. Dem downgrade three feeders but still managed to upgrade eight feeders to higher bands. Nawa! How dem dey do am? I just hope say dem no go turn am to one kind promotion wey no dey deliver. Port Harcourt DisCo dey owe 22 feeders compensation and dem don downgrade five feeders. Meanwhile, Abuja DisCo dey owe 21 feeders compensation and dem downgrade two feeders too.
And then Enugu DisCo dey owe 15 feeders compensation, with two don already downgraded. Kaduna DisCo no go carry last, as dem dey owe four customers with four feeders downgrading as well, while the quiet Yola DisCo dey manage just two feeders wey get downgrade. This one na serious matter o!
Last month, NERC don order nine DisCos to compensate 152 electricity feeders for poor supply, and this one na just the continuation. E be like say light matter no dey finish for Naija. According to NERC, dem make this decision to fit upgrade all these arrangements for the benefit of the customers under the Service-Based Tariff Framework. Wetin be that? Na just something wey go make sure say customers go dey get proper service.
The order also include the establishment of one new thing wey dem dey call the Transmission Infrastructure Fund (TIF). Dis fund go help support the funding for serious projects and initiatives wey go help improve service delivery for the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). NERC don put provision of N2.17 per kWh for energy wey dem go deliver to the grid. This one mean say we don dey prepare for improvement wey dey come.
As the news don drop, many citizens dey wonder how long this wahala go last. Na just the beginning of the fight for stable light? People dey express their frustrations for social media, but we fit just sit down dey sip palm wine while we dey wait for better light. Make we watch and see wetin go happen next!”
