The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly condemned the recent plans by some university Vice Chancellors to increase tuition fees across the country. In a statement issued by NANS Senate President, Akinteye Babatunde, in Ibadan, Oyo State, the association expressed its outrage over the proposed fee hikes.
Babatunde vowed that NANS would work tirelessly to ensure the government reverses this decision. He mentioned that the affected universities include the University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, and the University of Ibadan, among others.
According to Babatunde, these fee increases are aimed at undermining the Federal Government’s newly introduced Student Loan Scheme, which is designed to provide financial relief to students and their families. The scheme is part of President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s efforts to make education more accessible and affordable.
NANS called on President Tinubu to investigate this matter urgently and take decisive action, including sacking the Vice Chancellors who are behind the fee hikes. The association emphasized that any move to inflate fees under the guise of institutional development or financial constraints is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by the Nigerian student body.
The students also appealed to all well-meaning Nigerians, parents, and education stakeholders to join them in resisting these oppressive and senseless fee increments. They reiterated their commitment to defending the interests of Nigerian students and ensuring the successful implementation of the Student Loan Scheme without unnecessary hindrances.
