Naija Lose Over $500m to Cybercrime Every Year – EFCC Chair

Nigeria dey lose over $500 million to cybercrime every year, according to the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede. He reveal dis information during the National Cybercrime Summit held in Abuja on Tuesday.

Olukoyede say that in 2022 alone, Nigeria lose more than $500 million to cybercrime. He also mention that cybercrime suspects get a larger share of the 3,455 convictions recorded by EFCC.

The EFCC chair warn that if cybercrime no dey checked, it go pose grave dangers to the entire world. He add that cybercrime don become the third largest GDP in the world, with approximately 2,328 cases occurring daily.

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, who also speak at the summit, say he no dey scared of EFCC and he ready to give his support to the commission in fighting cybercrime. Lawal emphasize the importance of accountability and transparency in leadership.

Danladi Plang, Head of the Programme of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), suggest that Nigeria need to rethink its traditional approach to combating cybercrime. He propose focusing on channelling the energies of young people into more legitimate opportunities rather than just arrest, trial, conviction, and imprisonment.
