Abuja, Nigeria – Na so we hear am on June 6, 2025, say former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais don pass away at the age of 89. No be small wahala this one o! The news land like thunder for people wey dey follow legal matter for Naija. Uwais, wey born for Zaria, Kaduna State on June 12, 1936, hold the Chief Justice position from 1995 to 2006. Na real G he be!

According to him family wey drop statement, him die on Eid-el-Kabir day, wey be big day for Muslim faithful. Dem say, “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihir Rajiun. With hearts heavy yet full of gratitude to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, former Chief Justice of the Federation.” E still dey pain dem for heart, as dem plan funeral rites immediately after Juma’at prayers today for National Mosque wey dey Abuja.

Justice Uwais na person wey many people respect, especially for him commitment to judicial reform and independence during him tenure. E don show say we fit make our legal system better if we really wan try. Na him dey guide the ship of justice as Chief Justice for extra 11 years, no be small!

Na today e don reach where we dey remember am as wey him contribution no fit just fade into air. Na who fit forget justice wey no dey sleep on top him job? E carry the gavel well well, make sure say law no go become mere paper in Naija. People dey talk say the legal profession go miss im well, well.

Na just like that, the “legal lion” don respond to di final call. Many lawyers and judges dey plan to gather for the funeral to salute the man wey don impact so many lives and make Naija judiciary proud.

“E be like wetin we dey read for storybook, but dis one na real life. Uwais carry the torch of integrity for Naija law, and e go bright for the history books,” one of Uwais’ colleague talk as e dey recall the legacies wey Uwais leave behind.
