Lagos State dey ready to host the first ever Individual Boxing Club Championship, wey go hold from October 21 to 27. The tournament go take place at the Bishop Aggey Senior Secondary School, Mushin, Lagos.
The seven-day competition aim to discover new talents, encourage many clubs to participate, and promote inclusiveness. E go also serve as a platform for boxers to prepare well for the upcoming national championships.
Boxers from different registered clubs across Lagos State go compete in 13 male and 12 female weight categories. For the male category, the weights range from 48kg to 92+kg, while the female categories span from 48kg to 81+kg. Each coach can register one boxer per weight class.
The concept of the tournament be to encourage clubs across the state and empower the youth, in line with grassroots sports development. The Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, emphasize say the championship align with the commission’s mission of grassroots sports development.
The tournament go be in knockout format, where any boxer wey lose go exit automatically. Winners in each weight category go advance to the next phase under the supervision of state referees and judges to ensure fair and well-coordinated officiating standards.
While Mushin go host the pilot edition because of the high concentration of boxers there, future tournaments go be held across all five divisions of Lagos State, with Ajegunle slated as the next venue.
The Lagos State Sports Commission see this initiative as part of their broader strategy to promote physical activities in communities, shape youth development, and bring competitive sports to the grassroots level.
