Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, don dey seek support from the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) to improve meteorological services for Nigeria.
Keyamo make dis request when he visit the Secretary-General of WMO, Prof Andrea Saulo, in Geneva, Switzerland. Him go with the Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Abiodun Adejola, and some technical staff of NiMet.
The minister ask for support in several areas, including capacity building and training opportunities for Aeronautical Meteorological Personnel in Nigeria. Him also request support to launch a national roadmap for the Early-Warnings-for-All initiative by the United Nations, which dey built on four pillars.
Another thing wey Keyamo request be WMO support for NiMet to implement Digital Climate Advisory Services (DCAS) for sectoral activities in Nigeria. Him also ask for support to host the Numerical Weather Prediction Regional Centre of Excellence, as Nigeria dey provide technical support to Liberia and Sierra Leone in dis regard.
The Secretary-General of WMO, Prof Andrea Saulo, acknowledge the role of Nigeria in ensuring no country dey left behind in Africa in the development of meteorological services. Saulo hail the Nigerian government’s support for the Meteorological Service of Nigeria and emphasize the importance of such support, especially towards resource mobilisation for improved service delivery and early warning system improvement.
Saulo promise her support for regional centres for meteorology and climate change, and specifically pledge her support and that of WMO for Nigeria, considering the strategic importance of the country to the development of meteorological services.
