On Monday, the CEO of the Association of Power Generation Companies, Joy Ogaji, don come out to raise alarm say dis new plan from the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) wey reduce tariff from N209/kWh to N160/kWh no jive well. Dem say this plan fit cause wahala for the whole power sector if dem no careful.
EERC don declare dis reduction go start from August 1, 2025, saying na cost-reflective policy. But if you ask Joy Ogaji, she go tell you say na gbagbologbo assumptions wey dey ground dis decision. According to her, dis cut go put more pressure on GenCos wey dey already dey manage debts wey Federal Government no dey pay. EERC Chairman, Chijioke Okonkwo, try to explain say dem do review for MainPower’s costs before dem come settle for N160 tariff. But na wetin remi pass wetin meet am be this one o!
Ogaji no hold back as she insist say dem don turn GenCos into the “fall guy” for government’s sugarcoated policies wey no fit work. She talk say as per the assumption wey EERC get, dem don dey count on Federal Government to subsidize power generation cost wey go still dey kill GenCos. “Leave us wey dey generate power; let us breathe!” she quench.
She also drop bombshell by saying Nigeria’s power generators dey owe over N4 trillion, while Federal Government don only chop N900 billion from their budget for 2025. She dey wonder how dem wan solve this big wahala wey dey come if dem no fit even pay bills wey dey reach N250 billion every month like say na free something. Dis just dey show say Nigeria power matter no get any sugarcoating.
Stakeholders don dey ask questions like say, where EERC come dey find subsidy wey don disappear since Nigerian Electricity Distribution Company don remove am before? Ogaji dey talk say dem no wan make dis tariff confusion turn to dem own funeral as dem no want any k-leg for their own side.
